C18 Taking Pleasure in His Misfortune!
"Really? Even you, a disciple of a legendary healer, can't find a solution?" Jiang Zhuo exclaimed in astonishment.
Lin Shixuan's cheeks flushed with a hint of embarrassment as she murmured, "I've only scratched the surface of my training. Please, don't tease me."
"What's the patient's condition? I'm curious to hear more about it," Jiang Zhuo inquired with keen interest.
"It's bizarre. Despite using every method and instrument at my disposal, I can't pinpoint what's wrong with the patient. Yet, they remain in a coma. Odd, isn't it?" Lin Shixuan expressed, her eyes brimming with bewilderment.
"Really? That's quite unusual."
"Yes, and the patient's pulse grows weaker by the day. If this continues, they might not last much longer. The worst part is that this isn't just any patient—if I fail to cure them, my reputation could be destroyed," Lin Shixuan lamented, her brows knitted in worry.
"Perhaps I can be of assistance once we reach the hospital," Jiang Zhuo said with a reassuring smile.
Lin Shixuan looked at him, her expression a mix of surprise and skepticism. "Zhuo, since when did you start boasting? You were always so straightforward. Have the years changed you that much?"
"Not at all," Jiang Zhuo replied, caught between laughter and dismay.
"Let it go. I appreciate your willingness to help, but this isn't a task just anyone can take on," Lin Shixuan said dismissively with a wave of her hand.
Jiang Zhuo simply smiled, choosing to remain silent.
As a renowned national physician, he had yet to encounter a medical mystery he couldn't solve!
Within approximately fifteen minutes, they arrived at a hospital in the downtown area.
Lin Shixuan, having completed her studies, now served as the deputy director of the city's People's Hospital.
Despite her modest claim of having learned only the basics, Lin Shixuan's skills were anything but rudimentary. Her expertise made her more than fit for the role of deputy director. Without her exceptional abilities, she wouldn't have earned such a prestigious position.
"Sister Xuan, who is your mentor? Share with me; I might know them," Jiang Zhuo said as he accompanied Lin Shixuan into the hospital.
Lin Shixuan rolled her eyes and gave Jiang Zhuo's shoulder a playful punch. "When are you going to stop this ridiculous habit of bragging? If you knew my master, that would be something else!"
"Come on, tell me about it."
"Do you really want to know?" Lin Shixuan asked with a twinkle in her eye.
"Mhm."
"Well, my master is the renowned national physician of our Lunamis!" Lin Shixuan declared with pride.
Jiang Zhuo stumbled, nearly falling over.
"See, I knew I shouldn't have told you. I bet I've scared you now, haven't I?"
Lin Shixuan quickly steadied Jiang Zhuo, her voice tinged with exasperation.
Jiang Zhuo's expression was a mix of confusion and skepticism. Since when had he become Sister Xuan's master?
After a brief pause, he asked cautiously, "Sister Xuan, the national physician you're talking about—is it the same one from our Lunamis?"
"Of course! It's the very same esteemed national physician of Lunamis!"
"The only one in Lunamis..."
"Yes, exactly! It's him! But let's not delve into my master's affairs; I can only tell you that he's incredibly mysterious. Ordinary people can't even get a glimpse of him, much less meet him."
"Sister Xuan, truth be told, I am actually..." Jiang Zhuo began, clearing his throat and ready to explain earnestly.
"Zhuo, do me a favor and wander around for a bit, I need to go change," Lin Shixuan interrupted, clearly uninterested in hearing more. She headed straight for the women's changing room at the end of the corridor.
"Uh..."
Watching Lin Shixuan's retreating figure, Jiang Zhuo was caught between amusement and dismay, muttering to himself, "Actually, I am the national physician, but I don't recall ever taking you on as my disciple."
He couldn't shake the feeling that Lin Shixuan had been misled.
Yet, given her firm belief and her genuinely impressive medical skills, it seemed unlikely she was lying.
What was really going on?
Jiang Zhuo shook his head, unable to come to any conclusion.
He began to wander aimlessly through the hospital.
The place was bustling with activity; patients everywhere, and doctors and nurses in white coats constantly moving in and out of the wards.
"Huh?"
In the midst of his boredom, a familiar figure caught his eye.
At the entrance of a ward ahead, a group of people stood, among them a tall, beautiful woman with an air of persistent worry.
It was none other than the policewoman who had apprehended him the day before, Bai Ningshuang!
Bai Ningshuang exchanged a few words with the people beside her before turning and entering the hospital ward.
Curious, Jiang Zhuo followed suit.
At the ward's entrance, he saw a group of six or seven people gathered around a hospital bed.
An elderly man with white hair lay on the bed.
"What's happened? Why has my grandfather suddenly become paralyzed?"
Bai Ningshuang sat on the edge of the bed, clutching the old man's hand, visibly distraught.
"My assessment points to complications from high blood pressure," stated a young man in his late twenties, thoughtfully stroking his chin as he intently examined the patient.
"What do we do now? Can my grandfather be treated? Gao Hai, you must help me!" Bai Ningshuang's face was etched with worry as she pleaded.
Gao Hai offered a reassuring smile and a confident pat on his chest. "Ningshuang, rest assured, I'll do everything I can."
"Thank you. Please, examine my grandfather right away. We can't afford any mistakes," Bai Ningshuang pressed, her nerves on edge.
"Stay calm. The specialist I've called for will be here any minute," Gao Hai soothed her.
At that moment, a snicker echoed from the doorway.
Everyone turned to see who it was.
Bai Ningshuang's eyes widened in anger when she spotted Jiang Zhuo leaning against the doorframe, a smirk on his face. "What are you doing here?"
Gao Hai gave Jiang Zhuo a once-over and frowned. "Ningshuang, do you know this guy?"
"I..." Bai Ningshuang was a mix of fury and frustration.
She couldn't shake off the events of the previous day.
In her eyes, Jiang Zhuo had to be the son of some high-ranking official or a wealthy tycoon. How else could he have swayed the chief's decision?
The type Bai Ningshuang despised the most were those who lived a life of leisure, the spoiled scions of privilege.
"Young man, what's so funny?" Gao Hai inquired, his tone dropping coldly.
"Exactly, what's so amusing? Are you taking pleasure in my grandfather's illness?" Bai Ningshuang demanded, her anger flaring.
Jiang Zhuo curled his lip and spread his hands, "Don't get me wrong, I just find his statement a bit amusing."
"Amusing?"
Gao Hai's embarrassment turned to anger, and his gaze turned hostile. Clenching his teeth, he retorted, "What's so funny about what I said? And who are you, exactly, to judge my words?"
Jiang Zhuo simply shook his head and walked into the hospital room, casting a glance at the elderly man lying in the bed.
