He originally thought that he wouldn't feel any pain after his soul was shattered, but he was wrong. The pain of his soul shattering was far more intense than when he tempered his soul.

Fortunately, he had cultivated some of the Purgatory Golden Body, so it was able to help him withstand some pain. In that case, he would be able to endure the remaining pain.
