C9 Chapter 9

The next day Emma did not attend classes. Nobody suspected anything that first day, but by the third day everybody started to get worried. Enrique, Carol and Jeff went to her apartment that afternoon to look for her, but she wasn’t living there anymore. They become even more confused and Ortega became especially anxious. Days went by and then the university decided to get involved, contacting the Kilto Embassy and the police. A decision was made to treat her case with discretion, at the exclusive request of the Kiltish ambassador. Nobody knew that the ambassador was following Sean Thiel’s recommendations, who was backed by Jorkast Kolamzi, the president of the World Magic Council.

In the following weeks, Emma stayed on the move. She had multiple magic resources at her disposal, as well as contacts at the port, which made her believe that she would be able to leave the country without being caught by Sean or the Blue Hawks. Once she had escaped from Albion, by whatever means, she would return to Kilto and contact her family and the government. Emma believed that the Council or the Emissary Corps would want to hear what she had to say and that they would put an end to the lieutenant’s unorthodox activities. It made Emma sick to think that emissaries were killing innocent people. She had always believed that being a public servant meant doing something good for her country, but the truth she had uncovered made no sense. As the days went by her plan took shape with the help of her informant but there was something she had to do before she left Albion.

The only person she felt she had to tell about the emissaries was Enrique. He had something that made him special: the ability to move within the World Apart, which put him at great risk. She was lucky that there had not been a murder for some time because if Ortega or another person had been attacked, she would have had to come out of hiding before she was ready. Leaving someone to die was not an option for her.

Emma Kantor sent a letter to Enrique in which she explained where and when she wanted to meet him: May 5, at night, in an old library building on the outskirts of the city center. In the letter she also mentioned that she would explain about the monster that had attacked him and the other he had seen in his dreams. Upon reading the letter Enrique felt frightened thinking it might be a trap. He didn’t think that anybody else knew about those dreams, let alone Emma. Nevertheless, his curiosity and a strong desire to help his friend led him to trust the letter.
