C14 Red Scorpion Was Destroyed!(1)
As expected, aside from Lee Yunfei's squad, the inspection station was manned by only one officer and four logistics personnel. Yunfei had given strict orders to seal the station doors at the first sign of trouble. It was clear that the Red Scorpion's main force was planning an ambush from behind. But thanks to Chen Ye's strategy, they were prepared to spring an ambush of their own at the three-way intersection.
Chen Ye felt fortunate that they weren't in an age of advanced communication. While handheld communication devices existed, there were no portable ones for use in the field. This lack of technology had been a disadvantage at two checkpoints, but now it was about to become an advantage, allowing them to turn the tables on their adversaries.
The team had been stationed here for years and knew the surrounding terrain like the back of their hand. Yunfei surveyed the area and quickly identified several open vantage points for shooting. They would operate in pairs—one to shoot and the other to cover—to prevent being taken by surprise. Initially, Yunfei had intended for Chen Ye to take a position on the high ground, but Chen Ye gestured towards the underside of the transport vehicle and said, "I'm better off lying low here. Even if the vehicle breaks down, it won't go unnoticed. Plus, this spot has always been lucky for me."
Once their plan was set, Yunfei signaled, and the disciplined border soldiers took their positions. Yunfei himself, ever the audacious one, stood by the transport vehicle, casually smoking. He knew that without him as bait, the Red Scorpion wouldn't bite if they spotted just the solitary vehicle.
Half an hour later, Reed, the leader of the Red Scorpion, and his five teammates were closing in on the transport vehicle's tracks. Reed gestured for a halt, prompting a soldier with short golden hair to quietly ask, "Why are we stopping? The cash is just up ahead, waving us on!"
"I've got a bad feeling about this..." Reed murmured.
The golden-haired soldier scoffed, "Even you, the leader of the Red Scorpion, get scared? With all your fancy tactics, I say we just rush in guns blazing. These Z-country swine barely know how to handle a weapon. They're no match for us. We've been run ragged, and now you're second-guessing yourself?"
Reed's brow twitched at the realization that the mercenaries' loyalty was bought solely by money, making the team anything but a united front. Each member was driven by selfish motives, their alliance a temporary one, forged only by the prospect of financial gain. Shaking his head to dispel his irritation and the nagging sense of unease, he crouched lower and pressed on.
Before long, he spotted a military transport vehicle parked off the mountain trail. Peering through his binoculars, Reed passed them to one of his men and asked, "Is that Lee Yunfei?"
"Absolutely, he matches the description from the intel! Looks like the vehicle's broken down, and the driver's trying to fix it," the scout confirmed.
The blonde soldier, barely containing his excitement, flicked off his gun's safety and started to stealthily advance. "Thank the Lord! I don't have to go far to take you all down right here!"
"Hey! Don't go rogue! Firing now will give away our position! We don't fully understand what we're up against," Reed hissed, but the blonde soldier seemed deaf to his warnings. Reed, frowning, decided to follow. He was confident in his strategy, suspecting that the enemy's misfortune with the vehicle breakdown was genuine. He had clearly seen someone beneath the vehicle, and Yunfei occasionally kicking the wheel, as if cursing at someone.
Reed gestured for the team to move in. They were still over three hundred meters from the transport, too far to guarantee a hit. If they spooked the enemy, they risked a standoff, which would not bode well for them.
"Let's get closer! Within a hundred meters, I can take his head off with a single bullet!" the blonde soldier muttered to himself, fixated on the bounty for Yunfei's head offered by Moramatch.
Yunfei, ever vigilant, had been closely monitoring his surroundings, merely following Chen Ye's plan and putting on a show. Suddenly, he shuddered, a sharp glint in his eyes, and with a swift roll, he vanished into the tall grass beside the trail, clearly having engaged his Stealth mode.
"Bang!" Almost simultaneously, a series of gunshots rang out. Seven or eight bullets struck the spot where Lee Yunfei had just been, ricocheting off the door of the military transport vehicle and leaving several bullet holes.
Without needing any commands, the border guards, who had been on standby for quite some time, unleashed a barrage of bullets toward the source of the gunfire. The combined firepower of over ten soldiers wove a dense, impenetrable net, descending upon the main forces of the Red Scorpion!
"Damn it! It's a trap—an ambush! Pull back!" Reed yelled, sprinting away without a second thought for his own safety. Remaining hidden was pointless now; given the intensity of the enemy's firepower, the area would soon be riddled with holes if they didn't relocate swiftly.
"Ah!" Reed narrowly escaped a lethal shot, but of the remaining five team members, including the blond soldier, only the one who had been positioned further away due to a reconnaissance task managed to avoid the initial onslaught. However, as he poked his head out to flee, Chen Ye, who had activated all his skills from beneath the vehicle, delivered a headshot with a resounding "Bang!"
Achieving "Deadshot," he earned a "Beginner Skill Book."
The "One in a Thousand" achievement mission was unlocked: kill 100 out of 1000 targets with long-range attacks (targets must be deemed equivalent or superior to the user for a valid assessment), with the reward being a "Proficiency Skill Scroll."
Chen Ye was elated; fortune had indeed smiled upon him. He had completed the achievement mission without even realizing it, and he thought he caught a glimpse of a blue light—a blue treasure chest no less! He contained his excitement and checked the rewards that had materialized beside him due to his full inventory.
Beginner Skill Book: Upon use, it automatically upgrades basic skills above grade A to beginner level. If multiple basic skills are above grade A, it prioritizes the one with the highest proficiency for the upgrade. If no basic skills meet the criteria, then the skill with the highest level and proficiency will be maximized.
Reed retreated rapidly, opting not to head towards the east or south exits but instead diving into the woods near the checkpoint. Despite his experience and agility, he was no match for Lee Yunfei, a Shadow Wings alumnus endowed with the green "Lightness Technique" skill.
