C6 Green barracks
As soon as they had relocated to the green zone, even considering the disappointment, relief came bursting out of them. Suddenly Sabine and Markus had hope again that they’d be heading home soon. Sure, they would have to sacrifice their vehicles for that, and especially Markus his dearly beloved Defender, but that was a small price to pay in comparison to finally reaching their loved ones again.
Sabine’s flight to Frankfurt was already leaving the next morning and consequently she was running around the barracks like a fluttering chicken way before breakfast time, finally depriving the last person of their sleep. In the end she was shaking Markus who tried very hard to at least get a little bit of sleep.
“I still cannot believe that it’ll start in a couple of hours and that I’ll be with Pascal this evening already!”
Markus grunted, trying to ignore her, which of course was not possible. His answer sounded correspondingly pissed.
“Good morning Sabine. Hey, slow down. I’m happy for you but I’ll have to stay here another day and that pisses me off big time.”
“Markus we’ll definitely stay in touch. I’ll keep you posted on how things are in Frankfurt.”
Now he finally turned around, sat up straight and stroked
his stubbly beard. “Damn it, it’s not even time for breakfast yet, Sabine. Slow down. And what’s with “staying in contact”, how do you plan on doing that, hm?”
Sabine nudged him in a friendly manner.
“Don’t know, short messages maybe? But I’m not going to leave Frankfurt until I know for sure how you are.”
This woman could not be stopped, because anticipation had taken control of her completely, dictating her entire behavior. Breakfast, wash up, pack, check on everything.
And then it was time already. The four-engine Hercules C-130 stood ready with running engines on the runway when they left the barracks. Markus carried Sabine’s back pack to the loading ramp of the plane and then stopped, indecisive, not knowing what he should say now.
Sure, he was happy for Sabine but at the same time he was worried about her. And he was worried for himself as well, that he would be stuck here in the end while out there everything was falling apart.
“Well, it’s home for you now and I’m staying behind with a bad feeling in my gut.”
Sabine looked into his eyes, seeing despair in them. “Hey, you’re not here by yourself and your plane is leaving tomorrow. You’ll see, everything will be fine. We’ll stay in Frankfurt until I hear from you, I promise.”
Markus took her into his arms without saying anything, holding here tight. What could he say to that? In her mind she was probably already with Pascal. And he was anxiously awaiting his own departure as well.
“Sabine, you take care of yourself, okay? I could not bear it if anything happened to you.”
She smiled a little tense and nodded. “I will, there’s no need for you to worry. And Markus, thanks for the last few days, without you I would…”
His finger on her mouth stopped her flow of words, stopped her from what she was about to say. “Sabine, stop. Just don’t say anything. We’re here for each other. That’s how it has always been and that’s how it’ll always be, no matter what is coming.
Have a safe flight. And now, move your ass into the plane, before they take off without you.”
Suddenly he remembered something. Hastily he hurried one step after the tall woman. “Hey Sabine, hang on a second!”
The woman turned around, looking at him questioningly.
“Hm?”
Markus grinned. He had almost forgotten. “Merry Christmas, Sabine. I wish you a joyful time. I know it’s a little early, but still…”
He shrugged his shoulders helplessly and with it conjured a smile on her face. She nodded vehemently. “The same to you, Markus. With all my heart!”
Then she was on the ramp already and disappeared inside the plane shortly after without turning around one more time. Markus was very grateful for that. He remained beside the runway, watching until the plane was just a small point in the sky and finally vanished completely in the clouds.
