C6 It Was Inexplicable
Ye Feng's car hadn't even left the parking lot when he found himself in a perplexing situation. It began when the vehicle ahead came to an abrupt halt. Fortunately, Ye Feng's driving skills were sharp enough to stop in time.
However, the driver behind him wasn't as skilled, and despite Ye Feng's quick reflexes, the car behind him still crashed into his.
The driver of the rear car got out before the person in front even made a move. The words that spilled out of his mouth were puzzling. Initially, the man was quite rude, but then he abruptly shifted gears, suggesting they step out and talk.
Ye Feng was confused but aware that exiting the car might lead to a confrontation with this so-called Gold Chain.
He remained seated and simply shook his head, signaling his reluctance to leave the vehicle.
"What, scared I'll hit you if you step out? Relax, I won't lay a finger on you. Just chat with me about how you managed to charm this lady here."
"Look, the woman beside me is just my assistant. Would you believe that?"
Ye Feng couldn't quite grasp the man's angle but played along, hoping to convince the other party of his competence.
What gave him an edge was the knowledge that he was on Ye family turf, where he felt emboldened.
"I'm offering you the chance to step out as a courtesy. If I didn't care about being courteous, I'd drag you out myself!"
Ye Feng recognized the man's words might hold some truth, but he refused to be intimidated.
"Sir, we have pressing matters to attend to. Could you please not obstruct us here?"
Susan was accustomed to handling such situations, especially in the presence of the Ye family's eldest sister, and knew exactly what to say.
"The fiery spirit in a young lady is admirable, but what can you really do? I've asked you to get out of the car, so do it quickly. Don't push me to the point where my patience runs thin, and you end up with regrets."
"If you're here about the braking issue, I suggest you take it up with the car ahead. If they hadn't braked out of the blue, I wouldn't have had to either."
"I'm well aware that you wouldn't have braked if they hadn't, but right now, I'm dealing with you. What do you say to that?"
"You're being quite unreasonable, coming after me. I've already told you, this has nothing to do with me. If they hadn't braked, I wouldn't have either. So you shouldn't be confronting me. Besides, I wasn't even close to hitting that car. You're the one who braked too late."
Observing Ye Feng's reaction, Gold Chain realized his attempt at intimidation had failed. A glance at Ye Feng's car confirmed his suspicion that Ye Feng lacked any significant background.
"Driving such a clunker and you still want to stand up to me? That girl next to you probably isn't with you for your looks or style. Could it be that neither of you has any real talent, just a lack of fashion sense?"
Gold Chain figured the girl would be an easy catch for him today.
"Sir, I'd appreciate it if you spoke with more respect. Remember, you're on Ye family territory. You seem unaware of who you're crossing."
"Who am I crossing? Judging by your car and the way you're dressed, I'd show some respect if it were just you here. But him? He doesn't inspire any."
That's when Ye Feng realized the truth in the saying, "Clothes make the man, and the saddle makes the horse." His attire and beat-up car certainly didn't scream 'Ye family connection,' yet his net worth was substantial.
"I'd advise you not to provoke me. If you push me too far, things could get complicated."
"Complicated if I provoke you? You're not even stepping out of your car, which tells me you're probably scared."
Gold Chain could see that Ye Feng's reluctance to exit the vehicle was a sign of fear. He assumed Ye Feng lacked any real clout, probably just the boyfriend of the girl beside him.
"How can you assume I'm not getting out because I'm scared of you? I'm telling you, leave now. This isn't the place for you to throw your weight around. So, I'd advise you to make yourself scarce sooner rather than later."
Gold Chain eyed Ye Feng's unwavering demeanor with suspicion. Initially, he had assumed that someone driving such a beat-up car and wearing such shabby clothes couldn't possibly be so bold. But Ye Feng's confidence was not what Gold Chain had expected.
Still, Gold Chain wasn't about to be duped by a few words. He was convinced that Ye Feng was all bark and no bite; otherwise, he would have exited the vehicle already. So, there was no way he would just take Ye Feng's word for it and leave.
"Me, leave? I was hoping you'd get out and apologize to me. If you hadn't braked, how could I have possibly hit you? Do you have any idea how much my car is worth? Could you even afford the damages?"
"I'm not sure what your car is worth, but I do know it wasn't me driving it. You rear-ended me. I only hit the brakes after the car ahead did."
"I don't care about that. The bottom line is, if you hadn't braked, I wouldn't have crashed into you. My car is expensive, so I suggest you get out and apologize pronto, or this won't be a pleasant conversation."
Ye Feng paused to consider his next move, then shot Susan a meaningful glance.
Catching Ye Feng's cue, Susan nodded subtly, quietly pulling out her phone to make a discreet call to the Ye family's eldest sister.
All the while, Ye Feng remained seated in the car. He believed that getting out now would only serve to lose face. Better to stay put and negotiate with Gold Chain.
"If you're not willing to deal with the driver ahead, then I'd suggest you leave quickly. I'm not here because of this old clunker. Sure, I'm aware my car isn't in the same league as yours, but you should realize that my boldness in staying put means I have connections here."
Gold Chain's resolve waned as he listened to Ye Feng's assertive speech. He had been waiting for a while with no one coming to his aid, leading him to suspect that Ye Feng was merely bluffing.
"Enough already. If someone was really on your side, they would've shown up by now. You're just stalling, right? You'll be satisfied only when I run out of patience and yank you out of that car myself."
"I haven't told a single lie. I suggest you get out of here sooner rather than later. The more time you spend here, the less you'll be able to do about it. And if you're truly looking to settle a score, you ought to chase after the car ahead. I wouldn't have hit the brakes if he hadn't."
