C13 Looking down on Others!
"Lin Han, you spineless fool, get moving and fix that door!" Lee Kerong barked from behind, her voice dripping with arrogance.
Lin Han had no intention of engaging with her, but to his surprise, she was becoming increasingly audacious. He had grown accustomed to feigning weakness, but today he was determined to show her that he wasn't someone to be trifled with.
"Your sister is right next door. If you don't want to make a scene, apologize to me now. Otherwise, I'll go straight to her with this," Lin Han warned.
He disliked petty squabbles with women and was even more averse to physical confrontations. He would never strike a woman unless it was an absolute last resort, despite his current disdain for his sister-in-law.
But he wouldn't resort to violence. He preferred to resolve issues verbally whenever possible.
Lee Kerong was taken aback. Her usually docile brother-in-law was standing up to her, which only fueled her rage. She raised her voice, "How dare you defy me! I..."
Before she could finish, Lin Han cut in with a chilling tone, "Think carefully before you threaten me. Your phone and computer are still on, aren't they? They're filled with your personal stuff, and I've got your ID. I can easily show your sister what's on them."
Lin Han's nonchalant words struck a nerve with Lee Kerong. She glared at him, defiant and unwilling to back down.
Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed from downstairs.
"Excellent. It seems my mother-in-law is on her way up. Maybe I won't have to tell your sister; I can go directly to her," Lin Han mused as the footsteps drew nearer.
Left with no choice, Lee Kerong muttered a reluctant, "Sorry."
Lin Han wasn't expecting genuine remorse from her; she was, after all, accustomed to looking down on others. He simply needed to prove that he wasn't an easy target for her whims.
After her begrudging apology, Lee Kerong hurried back to her room, shooting him a venomous look over her shoulder.
As Lin Han turned to descend the stairs, he came face-to-face with his mother-in-law.
"Damn it, where do you think you're going? Isn't Kexin the one with the sprained ankle? If you're not staying to take care of her, where could you possibly be off to?"
"Our Lee family has given you food and shelter, even found you work, and you can't manage this simple task?"
Upon seeing Lin Han, his mother-in-law immediately launched into a tirade.
She had always been this way. Ever since he first became part of the Lee family, she had never hidden her disdain for him.
So, no matter the issue, whether trivial or serious, Lin Han was invariably the one she blamed. He had grown accustomed to it.
Without responding, he had more pressing matters to attend to and headed downstairs.
To his mother-in-law, however, his departure seemed like a snub.
She continued to berate him loudly from behind.
"What an ingrate! The Lee family has raised an ingrate. Didn't you hear me speaking to you? Are you deaf or mute? How dare you ignore me? Do you even realize who provides your sustenance?"
"I'd be better off raising a dog; at least a dog knows to wag its tail at its owner. You deliberately ignored me. How could I have been so mistaken about you?"
Lin Han was already downstairs but turned back to face his mother-in-law and stuck out his tongue, remarking nonchalantly.
"If you're so fond of dogs, perhaps you should consider getting one. In a pinch, it might actually be of some help to you."
His words only intensified her ranting, her voice now louder than before.
"Kexin, just look at the person you've brought home. I warned you he was no good, but you wouldn't listen and insisted on bringing him into our home. If only he were half as decent as Yang Jun, I'd be content."
Yang Jun?
Who was Yang Jun?
Lin Han's pace slowed. This was the first time he had heard the name. He had never come across it before.
There had to be some connection between Lin Kexin and this Yang Jun; otherwise, his mother-in-law wouldn't have casually dropped the name.
Even though his marriage to Kexin was merely a contract with no real emotion involved, Lin Kexin was still his wife in name.
Hearing his mother-in-law praise someone else while putting him down made him feel a pang of sadness.
It's no surprise Lin Kexin kept her distance; she already had someone special in her heart.
During our heart-to-heart last night, she conveniently left out this crucial detail.
I had hoped that, even though our relationship might not deepen, we could at least interact as friends after our talk.
But it turns out it was all a facade.
Lin Kexin never spoke a word of truth.
Then again, neither did I.
We're even in this game of deception.
However, Lin Han had more pressing matters to deal with, so he clenched his jaw and pressed on.
The nagging voice of his mother-in-law continued to echo from behind.
Lin Han was accustomed to it by now, but he was determined to uncover the truth about Yang Jun and his connection to Lin Kexin.
Right now, the priority was to handle an urgent task: to check the recent schedule of the Chepapp Corporation's chairman.
After leaving the room, Lin Han made a secretive phone call and then drove directly to their prearranged meeting spot.
They had chosen Sun Hai KTV, the city's most prestigious karaoke venue, frequented only by high-ranking officials and the wealthy elite.
The average person couldn't even get past the front door without being shooed away by the security.
As Lin Han approached the entrance, the guards dismissed him with impatience.
"You think a nobody like you can get into this KTV? Beat it, or I'll have someone deal with you."
It had indeed been several years since Lin Han had set foot in this KTV, so the guards' failure to recognize him was understandable.
Before he could explain, someone else approached from behind, and the guards immediately scurried over to greet the newcomer.
"Young Master Long, welcome! We haven't seen you in ages. Please, come inside. We've prepared the finest room for you."
Without sparing the guards a glance, Long Fei strode into the KTV.
Lin Han watched as the heir to the Long family, Long Fei, whom he had frequently interacted with in the past, entered. But now, in his disguise, he went unrecognized.
This was a positive development; Lin Han had no desire for others to recognize him.
The two condescending security guards raised their voices upon noticing Lin Han lingering at the door.
"Why are you still here? Get lost, or do I need to call some people to escort you out?"
