C14 The Interview
With his skills, Zhang Xiaodong was more than qualified to be a bodyguard for Mu's Group. It's worth noting that during his time abroad, the bounties that could entice Xiaodong to take action were always in the seven-figure range—and that's if you could even find a price for his services!
"Are you here to interview for a bodyguard position as well?" Xiaodong appraised Short Fatty with a glance.
"Hehe, I've dreamed of being a cop since I was a kid, but I didn't quite have the brains for the police academy. I've picked up a few skills over the years and thought I'd give this a shot. Who knows, I might even land a lead bodyguard role," Short Fatty chuckled sleazily. "And even if I don't get the job, just getting a glimpse of the Female Chairman is worth it."
"You certainly have big dreams," Xiaodong remarked, touching his nose.
If someone with Short Fatty's physique could pass the interview, it would say a lot about Mu's Group's hiring standards.
Zhang Xiaodong often shamelessly admitted to himself that he was a hard worker. Despite being a billionaire, he still pursued a career as someone else's bodyguard...
After mulling it over for two days, Xiaodong concluded that nothing came as naturally to him as this line of work.
"Brother, my name is Lee Haige. If we both get hired, we'll be colleagues. What's your name? I've got your back," Lee Haige said, shaking his Big Head with a look of determination. Clearly, he was convinced he'd become the ultimate bodyguard and win over the Female Chairman, reaching the pinnacle of success.
"Brother Hai, you're impressive. I'm Zhang Xiaodong. I know a little martial arts, but I'm not sure if that's enough to get hired."
Xiaodong shook his head in resignation. Although he felt confident, he was well aware of the industry's unpredictability.
Nowadays, most bodyguards were just a step above security guards, often there more for intimidation than anything else.
"Don't worry, brother. As long as you're ambitious, I'll be sure to help you out," Lee Haige said with a commanding presence that seemed to match his name. "My brother, you're amazing."
"Thank you. We should be selected soon. Let's stand ready."
Zhang Xiaodong noticed several uniformed individuals emerging in the distance. Their stride was vigorous, and their piercing gazes were intimidating.
Teams of ten emerged from the building, each exuding an air of undeniable grandeur.
As the five squads lined up, a hush fell over the interviewees. The sight before them was somewhat daunting. Over fifty individuals stared down the candidates with icy demeanors, their eyes brimming with scorn and mockery.
"Why on earth does a company need so many security guards? Are they not concerned about expenses?"
Zhang Xiaodong's face betrayed his bewilderment. Rather than feeling overawed, he found the situation peculiar.
In the heart of the city, this office building was typically the least of one's security worries. Violent incidents were rare, so most people relied on the police for security matters.
"Bro, you're not in the know. Mu's Group has never been short on cash. Plus, the women here are exceptional—beauty, wealth, and education, they have it all."
Lee Haige was clearly a chatterbox. Give him an opening, and he'd run with it.
"High standards call for high doses of medication, it seems. But seriously, this display is quite odd."
Zhang Xiaodong chuckled, his curiosity about Mu's Group piqued. He couldn't fathom why the company would continue hiring bodyguards when their security force was already so robust.
Not even high-profile companies would go to such lengths. Thus, Zhang Xiaodong's curiosity deepened. As the crowd quieted, his conversation with Short Fatty carried across the room.
Suddenly, Zhang Xiaodong and Lee Haige became the center of attention, sticking out like sore thumbs. When thousands of eyes fixate on you, even the strongest will can falter.
Lee Haige's complexion soured, fear rendering him breathless.
"That kid over there, you sure have a lot to say, don't you?"
A young man stepped forward from the ranks of security, eyeing Zhang Xiaodong with a mix of contempt and challenge.
"I'm here for the interview, not a prison sentence. Until it starts, who says I can't speak?"
"I'm here for an interview, not to be silenced like I'm in prison. Who said we can't talk before the interview starts?" Zhang Xiaodong raised an eyebrow, ready to confront the person who was clearly looking for trouble.
From what he could tell, these guys were trying to intimidate the new recruits to make them easier to manage later on. "Hehe, in that case, your interview starts now."
A member of the security team suddenly lunged forward, aiming a punch at Zhang Xiaodong. With a sneer, Zhang Xiaodong swiftly countered. The exchange was lightning-fast. The security team member had thrown the first punch, but in an instant, he was sent flying by Zhang Xiaodong's retaliation.
"Wow..."
"Man, that's impressive..."
The onlookers were astonished. The fight had been decided in mere moments, something none of them had anticipated. Zhang Xiaodong watched the man struggling to get up, feeling a surge of anger. Normally, an interview would follow a set procedure, but this man had clearly intended to cause harm. In such circumstances, Zhang Xiaodong had no choice but to fight back.
"Anyone else? Come at me, all together if you like."
His cold gaze swept over the others, his face showing a trace of disdain. These men were also ex-military, evident from the way they moved. Yet, it seemed that after leaving the service and settling into a more comfortable life, they had forgotten their roots and become overly confrontational.
"Kid, you've got quite the nerve. I'm the captain of this security team, Wang Feng. Since you're so eager for an interview, let's spar," said Wang Feng, his expression steely as he ignored his downed teammate and fixed his eyes on Zhang Xiaodong.
The atmosphere in the company had been tense these past few days. Wang Feng had noticed many changes within various departments. The CEO had been particularly harsh on the security department, openly berating them during meetings.
As a result, Wang Feng decided to recruit new members to bolster the security team and to find a couple of truly skilled individuals to assist the company.
"Alright, I'm open to hiring anyone. But that guy who glared at me earlier needs to apologize. He really gave me a fright."
"Sure, anyone can interview me. But first, that guy who was glaring at me so fiercely a moment ago needs to apologize—he really scared me," Zhang Xiaodong said, pointing at the man who had just gotten up, his lips curled in a smile laced with mockery.
Zhang Xiaodong never shied away from giving a harsh lesson to those who were quick to use excessive force on others. It was only after facing life and death that one truly learned to respect life.
"Alright, bring it on."
Wang Feng, the captain of the security team, lunged at Zhang Xiaodong without warning. He understood that to recruit others, he needed to assert his dominance first. A soldier through and through, Wang Feng had always believed in the power of his fists, which made his actions ruthlessly efficient.
Bang!
A thunderous noise echoed as Wang Feng's body was suddenly sent flying. Zhang Xiaodong watched with an icy gaze as the others thought about closing in. The entire room erupted into chaos, utterly stunned by Zhang Xiaodong's formidable counterattack.
