C6 Five Minutes to Memorize Four Books
Regardless of whether their paths aligned or not, Lin Haoyu found himself once again at the city television station's entrance. Yu Dandie, following the script's direction, hurried off to record her program upon arrival.
"Little brother, I'm off to record now. You wait here for me, I'll be back shortly," Yu Dandie said with a smile, giving Lin Haoyu careful instructions.
Only after Lin Haoyu nodded reluctantly did she bounce away from the entrance, heading to an unknown teletorium.
"Humph! There's definitely something fishy about this interview process, but if I don't pass, I can't complete my mission," Lin Haoyu muttered to himself outside the recruitment office, expressing his disdain for the examiner's underhanded tactics.
He was frustrated at the thought of potentially wasting the Save/Load opportunity he had won in a lucky draw. If he didn't pass, he'd have to have a serious talk with her.
The door handle to the recruitment room clicked, but Lin Haoyu had arrived a bit early this time and didn't encounter the girl who had been tormenting him. Instead, he entered the room directly.
"Hello, are you here for the interview?" Jian Yang asked with a slight smile, taking a leisurely sip of his tea as he greeted Lin Haoyu.
"Yes, I'm Lin Haoyu, and I'm applying for the host position," Lin Haoyu responded, feeling somewhat exasperated. The situation felt like asking a college student to take a third-grade exam—easy and familiar, yet utterly tedious.
"So, you're applying to be a host. You must have some experience in this field, right?" Kang Biqin inquired, her brow furrowed as she fixed Lin Haoyu with an unpleased stare, pondering his qualifications.
"Sorry, my only experience is a single school speech. I don't have any other background," Lin Haoyu admitted openly, with a slight smile.
Instantly, the expressions of the three judges soured, clearly unimpressed by Lin Haoyu's lack of experience.
"To apply for a host position with no background is quite audacious," Kang Biqin remarked coldly, with a snort, as she took a delicate sip of her tea, her tone laced with scorn.
Xie Chengyun let out a soft sigh and motioned with his hand.
"Please, have a seat."
As he finished speaking, Lin Haoyu's eyes sparkled with mischief. He deliberately approached the chair, feigning readiness to sit.
What a joke. He had already taken a nasty fall here once before; there was no way he'd repeat that mistake.
Kang Biqin watched Lin Haoyu with eager anticipation, hoping he would embarrass himself and thus score poorly.
"Clang!"
Yet another crisp sound rang out, not from beneath Lin Haoyu, but from the smug curl of his lips.
"Hahaha... Huh?"
Jian Yang's hearty laughter had just begun to fill the room when he caught the sly smirk on Lin Haoyu's face, leaving him feeling rather sheepish.
Kang Biqin, who had been full of anticipation, suddenly looked sullen. Xie Chengyun, however, remained unfazed and continued to objectively note the proceedings.
It's not every day someone manages to outsmart a panel of judges during an interview.
But Lin Haoyu had just done that, leaving his adversary at a loss for words.
"Ah, my apologies. It seems my words have so overwhelmed the chair that it's broken."
A goofy chuckle from him quickly diffused the tension in the room, showcasing Lin Haoyu's quick thinking and resourcefulness.
"...Well then, perhaps you'd like to take a seat at our judges' table?" Kang Biqin suggested, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she smirked disdainfully.
Lin Haoyu gestured dismissively.
"Let's not. I fear I might intimidate another chair into breaking, and I wouldn't want you to take a tumble."
"Pfft!"
Jian Yang and Xie Chengyun, both men of hearty dispositions, couldn't contain their amusement any longer and burst into uproarious laughter, completely disregarding Kang Biqin's dark mood and uneven breaths.
Clearly irked by Lin Haoyu's jest at her expense, Kang Biqin's face darkened as she pulled four books from the judges' bench.
"Clang!"
She tossed the books onto the table in front of Lin Haoyu with a brusque motion and let out a cold sneer.
"You have five minutes to memorize these four books. After that, I will choose a page, and you must recite it back to me, along with the English translation."
Upon seeing this, Lin Haoyu, who had been eagerly anticipating this moment, felt a spark of excitement. The anxiety he had been carrying all day finally dissipated.
At last, his tireless efforts weren't for naught. Persistence in martial arts truly pays off!
"It's the same old routine: Journey to the West, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and a Xinhua dictionary."
Lin Haoyu chuckled ruefully as he glared at the malicious examiner before him.
"This has to be a joke. There's no way a first-time applicant could pass."
Who could possibly memorize four thick books, each nearly a thousand pages, in just five minutes?
That would be superhuman. Even downloading a book with hundreds of thousands of words takes a minute, doesn't it? For four books, that would just barely scrape by in five minutes.
But comparing the human brain to a computer is apples to oranges. We're just not the same.
"So, have you taken a good look?"
Kang Biqin couldn't contain her glee when she saw Lin Haoyu staring blankly at the book without even flipping a page. Her smile shone like a radiant chrysanthemum.
"Just as I thought, this young man can't possibly memorize these four books. It's beyond human capability."
Kang Biqin smirked internally. Without such a challenging test, how else could she reserve the last spot for her nephew?
"Enough already. This test is ridiculously unfair. It's simply impossible for anyone to pass."
Jian Yang was unimpressed, even dismissive of the challenge.
After all, memorizing four books in five minutes was an impossible feat.
"Pfft, as a host, if you don't have even this level of memory, how will you ever manage to memorize the numerous scripts required in the future!"
Kang Biqin's excuse was delivered with unwavering confidence, despite being utterly preposterous.
"Alright, just recite the first page of each book for now. As for the Aglon translation... considering how highly examiner Jian Yang regards you, we'll let that slide."
With a haughty tilt of her head, Kang Biqin looked down at Lin Haoyu with a cold smile.
After all, she herself couldn't fathom anyone in the world capable of such a feat.
"Oh? Examiner, are you certain I only need to recite it once?"
Lin Haoyu offered a slight smile, which quickly solidified on his face. He wasn't questioning Kang Biqin's words; rather, he was skeptical about the claim that he could recite the first page of every book.
"What's the deal? I thought we were supposed to memorize the last page of the Xinhua dictionary!"
It appeared that the Save/Load technique still had its butterfly effect as an unintended consequence.
But, thankfully, Lin Haoyu had taken the precaution of memorizing the first and last pages of each book, so he remained unaffected by the butterfly effect.
"Hmph! Surely you're not saying you can't recite it, are you?"
Kang Biqin gave a frosty smile, a gleam of sharpness in her eyes and a sly grin tugging at the corner of her mouth.
"The poem states: Before order, chaos reigned, unseen in the vast void. Since Pangu shattered the primeval darkness, clarity and murkiness were defined..."
Lin Haoyu allowed himself a brief smile, pondered for a couple of seconds, then burst forth with a string of verses that seemed as obscure as classical prose.
The introduction to Journey to the West might be a bit archaic, but it had a pleasing rhythm and was surprisingly easy to memorize.
"Life thrives under supreme benevolence, and all creations turn to goodness. To understand the secrets of creation's power, one must delve into the epic of Journey to the West..."
Kang Biqin's cold laughter filled the air as she watched Lin Haoyu earnestly recite from Journey to the West, thinking scornfully to herself.
"Hmph! Do you actually believe you can recite it all? Mere bluster doesn't count as recitation!"
Kang Biqin was increasingly convinced that Lin Haoyu posed no real threat. It seemed a foregone conclusion that her nephew would secure the role of a host at the television station.
"Better this way, it saves me the trouble of continuing."
