Wu County had been a strategic military town since ancient times. It was the center of political and military affairs. During the Warring States Period, it was called the Wu County of the Chu Country.

In the thirty years of King Qin Zhaoxi's reign, the county was renamed to Wu County.

During the second year of Emperor Zhang Wu's reign, the county was renamed to Beizi County
