C1849 Blessed Are We after the Calamity

"Bang, bang bang …"

A continuous series of muffled sounds rang out. It sounded like someone was beating on a broken little drum. The sounds were short and rhythmic.

In the midst of these incessant knocks, there would occasionally be soft "hmph" sounds. It was hard to tell if the sounds were due to comfort or pain, or just unconscious sounds
