C14 A Bitter Melon Is a Treasure

This morning, Misty Peak was abuzz with an unusual liveliness.

"Chief, could you please share the spirit animal feed recipe with us at Fae Peak? We'll be sure to repay the favor in the future."

Witnessing the Fae Peak disciples bowing deeply, Su Jiuming felt uncomfortable and quickly gestured for them to rise.

"There's no need for such formalities. We're all disciples of the same sect. Just take the recipe; there's no need for all this."

He then welcomed the disciples inside for tea and diligently wrote out the formula for them.

Perhaps it was because the Fae Peak disciples generally lacked talent and their cultivation levels were modest, but Su Jiuming felt an inexplicable kinship with them, which made for easy conversation.

After all, they were all farmers with no distinctions of rank or power, making their interactions all the more comfortable.

"Chief, all the other ingredients make sense, but what exactly is this one?"

As they grew more acquainted, the disciples found that the chief wasn't as intimidating as they had expected. He was surprisingly approachable and direct with his inquiries.

"Ah, that ingredient? Come with me."

Realizing that explanations fell short, Su Jiuming led the Fae Peak disciples into the back mountain.

Not far along, he pointed to an inconspicuous plant bearing red berries and declared, "Here it is."

"Chief, this is just a common weed. It's so ineffective that even the pigs on the farms below won't eat it..."

The Fae Peak disciples exchanged puzzled glances until one of them, Feng Liang—the one who had initially provided Su Jiuming with various chicken feed ingredients—spoke up.

"Whether they eat it or not, why not take it back, try it out, and see for yourself?"

Su Jiuming chuckled, then swiftly harvested a handful of the plant and motioned for the disciples to return with him.

The Fae Peak disciples were astounded by his fluid, precise movements. Without so much as a glance, he had accurately picked more than a dozen of the plants, not mistaking them for any other herb.

It was a simple gesture, but it revealed the chief's formidable strength.

He obediently followed Su Jiuming back to the courtyard residence, meticulously grinding each ingredient listed in the formula, crushing and mixing them together. The entire process appeared quite mundane, and the so-called spirit animal meal seemed nothing more than a bowl of ordinary chicken feed. It wasn't until the Feathered Rooster was added that the chicken feed finally resembled the spirit animal meal he had seen previously.

"Chief, this Feathered Rooster is extremely unpalatable to spirit animals. Why does it attract them to eat after being added?" Feng Liang expressed the confusion shared by all the Fae Peak disciples, who turned their gaze to Su Jiuming, eager for an explanation.

"Uh, this..." Su Jiuming was at a loss for words, not knowing that the item was distasteful to spirit animals, and even the system couldn't bear to watch:

[Why don't you just brush it off?]

"Ahem, it's already noon. Let's all take a break. We can discuss matters after lunch," Su Jiuming said, clearing his throat. He then stood up to pick vegetables from the garden, preparing to cook, all the while mentally replying to the system: No need to tell me, I already know.

With practiced ease, Su Jiuming swiftly prepared the vegetables and soon had several dishes ready. He called the Fae Peak disciples to sit down and join him.

"Chief, what is this? It has a somewhat bitter taste, but there's a unique fragrance to it," one disciple inquired while eating the stir-fried bitter melon with eggs.

"Bitter melon, it's hanging right over there," Su Jiuming casually pointed to the bitter melons on the shelf outside the door, puzzled as he ate.

How could these cultivators be so uninformed? It was one thing not to know about the Feathered Rooster, but bitter melon too?

The disciples followed Su Jiuming's gesture and were taken aback. This was the same plant considered a weed in the countryside, known as Bitter Melon.

Could Bitter Melon really taste this good?

Because of its bitterness, people rarely consumed Bitter Melon, usually picking and drying it to make a drink in rural areas. Eating it directly was something the Fae Peak disciples had never considered.

As Feng Liang ate the Bitter Melon and noticed the Feathered Rooster scattered on the ground outside, he had an epiphany. He immediately stood up, smacked his forehead in realization, and bowed to Su Jiuming:

"I get it now. The Chief is trying to tell us that, like the bitter melon, although it's bitter, if handled correctly, it too can serve a unique purpose!"

"Thank you for the lesson, Chief!"

Upon hearing Feng Liang's words, the other disciples of Fae Peak were taken aback. They gazed at Su Jiuming, the Chief Disciple of Veiled Moon, with newfound admiration. Despite his simple and handsome appearance, there was something more to him.

One by one, the disciples stood and, following Feng Liang's lead, bowed to Su Jiuming, expressing their gratitude.

Su Jiuming, who had been enjoying his meal, remained seated, suddenly feeling awkward. He quickly gestured for the disciples to sit and continue eating.

The atmosphere soon returned to normal, yet the disciples from Fae Peak now regarded Su Jiuming with even greater respect.

After a while, they glanced at the Jabberwocky. Su Jiuming and the Fae Peak disciples engaged in lively conversation, promising to meet again someday.

After the Fae Peak disciples departed, Feng Liang lavished praise upon Su Jiuming, implying:

"When it comes to raising chickens, Chief, you truly are the expert."

Despite Lee Daoquan, the eldest senior brother, ordering silence on the matter of the chicken feed, the admiration for Su Jiuming among the Fae Peak disciples couldn't be contained.

They spread praise for Su Jiuming's profound swordsmanship throughout the sect, sharing their insights on cultivation and spirit animals, which improved many disciples' opinions of him.

However, due to Su Jiuming's peculiar past actions and the stories spread by his second senior brother, Qin Fengzhu, and third senior sister, Ma Qian, the majority of the sect's disciples still held a skewed view of him.

They saw Su Jiuming, the Chief of Veiled Moon, as someone with an unknown level of cultivation but notable achievements in swordsmanship, an odd character, and difficult to approach.

So, despite the praises sung by the Fae Peak disciples, no one dared to intrude upon the Chief's solitary cultivation.

Except for him.

Among the Inner Sect disciples of Veiled Moon, there was Zhang Liao, who had the least talent and the lowest cultivation level, even compared to many Outer Sect disciples.

Zhang Liao's aptitude should have precluded him from being an Outer Sect disciple, but his family had many cultivators and held some influence within the Veiled Moon Sect.

As the sole male heir of his family, Zhang Liao was burdened not only with mediocre talent but also with the weight of his entire family's expectations.

From a young age, he was pushed into the Veiled Moon Sect by his family, and it took considerable networking to scrape his way into the Inner Sect.

Yet, upon his admission to the Inner Sect, Zhang Liao's abilities did not skyrocket as the family elders had anticipated. His cultivation pace remained frustratingly slow.

Zhang Liao was well aware of his predicament. Despite consuming countless pills and exerting tremendous effort, significant progress eluded him, leaving him stuck at the Foundation Building stage.

Within the Inner Sect of the Veiled Moon, Zhang Liao had become the butt of the joke. He was snubbed not just by his fellow Inner Sect disciples but also looked down upon by many from the Outer Sect.

When word reached him that the sect's chief, Su Jiuming, possessed extraordinary swordsmanship skills, Zhang Liao saw it as his last lifeline and made a beeline for Misty Peak.
