C9 Thousandyear Centipede

"Junior Brother, don't open it!"

Lee Daoquan had just arrived at Misty Peak when he saw Su Jiuming about to open the cage. He was horrified and yelled at Su Jiuming.

But it was too late. Su Jiuming had already opened the cage, releasing a faint black mist and scattering the insects within.

The insects, previously entwined and biting each other, were now growing larger and crawling towards Su Jiuming.

The red and black centipede quickly grew to a meter in length and was still increasing in size!

What could it be if not a thousand-year centipede?

"Senior Brother, what brings you here?"

Upon hearing Lee Daoquan's voice, Su Jiuming shook the cage and looked at him, puzzled.

He couldn't help but feel a twinge of envy seeing Lee Daoquan standing midair on his sword.

He had labored for hours to return to Misty Peak, and yet Lee Daoquan had arrived shortly after him by flight.

The power of immortal cultivators was truly fearsome, and he envied it.

Noticing the thousand-year centipede creeping up behind Su Jiuming, poised to strike, Lee Daoquan was alarmed.

"Junior Brother, move! Watch out behind you!"

Lee Daoquan had no time for conversation, only urgency as he shouted for Su Jiuming to dodge.

His heart pounded with worry, knowing that even if Su Jiuming managed to evade, the two of them were no match for the centipede.

What were they to do?

"Something behind me? Why should I dodge?"

Su Jiuming, confused, turned around and saw a large goose-yellow furball pecking at bugs on the ground.

It was the Jabberwocky.

Seeing the Jabberwocky feasting contentedly, Su Jiuming chuckled and stroked its fluffy fur, gesturing reassuringly to Lee Daoquan:

"Senior Brother, there's no need to worry. The Jabberwocky is quite tame."

While Su Jiuming's face remained impassive, he couldn't help but feel delighted inside:

Who would have thought the esteemed head disciple of the Veiled Moon would be afraid of a mere chicken?

"…"

Lee Daoquan was at a loss for words, his face a mix of joy, astonishment, and fear, making for a truly remarkable expression.

He wasn't afraid of the strange chicken; it was the thousand-year centipede that terrified him!

Yet, he found himself speechless with astonishment at the chicken raised by Su Jiuming.

Moments ago, when the centipede lunged at Su Jiuming, the Jabberwocky swiftly captured it and began to peck away.

Each peck wounded the venomous insects, reducing them to the size of ordinary pests.

Some were pecked to the brink of death, writhing on the ground in apparent agony.

Despite its formidable strength, the centipede was pecked into losing its formidable appearance, looking hardly different from its lesser kin, yet it remained unscathed in vitality.

This demon, having cultivated for a millennium, possessed intelligence, though it had not yet achieved human form.

Realizing the dire situation, it attempted a swift escape, its multitude of legs propelling it rapidly.

But the Jabberwocky was relentless, pinning it to the ground with its claws, rendering it immobile.

What kind of creature was this chicken?

It had managed to subdue the ancient centipede effortlessly and devoured other century-old poisonous beings.

Relieved to see Su Jiuming unharmed, Lee Daoquan's shock gave way to a sigh of relief.

Descending from his sword, he approached Su Jiuming quickly, examining the chicken and the centipede beneath its claws.

The Jabberwocky, holding down the centipede, continued to peck and ingest the other insects, flapping its seemingly frail wings with glee.

The centipede, toyed with by the chicken, seemed to be saved for a final, delicious morsel.

Had Lee Daoquan not witnessed the scene unfold, he might have found the chicken's eating habits endearing.

But now, he watched intently as the centipede struggled until it was finally consumed, allowing himself to fully relax.

Su Jiuming, puzzled by Lee Daoquan's anxious demeanor, couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction seeing the Jabberwocky feast with such gusto.

It wasn't in vain that he traveled so far and worked so hard to catch insects for the Jabberwocky.

"You just took a nap. How strenuous could that have been?"

The system picked up on Su Jiuming's intent and couldn't help but interject with a sarcastic remark.

"Senior Brother, don't you think the Jabberwocky is rather adorable?"

With Lee Daoquan present, Su Jiuming chose to ignore the system and engaged in conversation with Lee Daoquan instead.

"It's very cute... Junior Brother, where did this chicken come from, and how did it get so big?"

Lee Daoquan inquired about the chicken's origins, though he found himself somewhat reluctant to utter the name "Jabberwocky."

"I found an egg during a walk in the mountains and hatched it."

Su Jiuming replied nonchalantly, seemingly unconcerned.

Despite the system's lack of utility, Su Jiuming was well aware that such matters were not to be disclosed.

Picked it up just like that? Lee Daoquan was naturally skeptical.

But since Su Jiuming was reticent, he didn't press the issue.

Bai Yifeng had once mentioned that Su Jiuming was the chosen one, born in alignment with the divine magic, and every action he took was connected to the laws of Heaven.

Ordinary people couldn't fathom his thoughts or predict his actions.

"Being the chosen one, Su Jiuming is guided by divine will in all he does. We should simply follow the path set by Heaven. What we can learn from it all depends on our own destiny," Bai Yifeng's words resonated with Lee Daoquan.

He neither wished to probe deeper nor felt he had the right to. Instead, he regarded the Jabberwocky raised by Su Jiuming as a divine beast.

To keep company with the chosen one and possess the skill to confront a millennium-old centipede, what else could it be if not a divine beast?

After a brief conversation with Su Jiuming, Lee Daoquan left Misty Peak to report back to Bai Yifeng.

Given the gravity of the situation, Lee Daoquan naturally needed to consult with his master, Bai Yifeng, the head of the Veiled Moon sect.

Upon listening to Lee Daoquan's account, Bai Yifeng stroked his slightly overgrown white beard, pondering for a moment.

He then instructed Lee Daoquan to keep the matter confidential: "Tell others that the thousand-year centipede has been slain by me. The affairs of the Son of Heaven must remain a secret from those outside our sect."

A man is innocent until he possesses a treasure, which then becomes his crime.

Despite the various sects' clandestine efforts to find those rare talents who have not yet been recognized as the Chosen Ones to join and be nurtured, their search has thus far been fruitless.

Should the emergence of a Chosen One from the Veiled Moon become public knowledge, it would undoubtedly spell catastrophe for the sect.

"It would be wise not to publicize the news of Su Jiuming's triumph over the thousand-year centipede, nor his status as the Chosen One," it was advised.

"The Chosen One's wishes are clear. We shall follow his directive," came the response.

Lee Daoquan nodded, his understanding clear.

His junior brother's dedication to mastering divine magic and his concern for the welfare of all impressed Lee Daoquan deeply.

He also resolved to refrain from inquiring further into the matter.

Su Jiuming desired no acclaim, choosing instead to erase all traces of his deeds and dedicate himself to his spiritual practice. Lee Daoquan could not, in good conscience, disrupt Su Jiuming's earnest intentions.

Henceforth, Su Jiuming would stand as Lee Daoquan's exemplar and the Veiled Moon's eternal leader.
