C11 A Super Fast Reading Speed
Ye Chen's brow furrowed slightly.
Sun Mingyuan was openly hostile towards him.
Unwilling to back down, Ye Chen asked, "Who are you?"
With a confident smile, Sun Mingyuan replied, "My name is Sun Mingyuan, the student chair of the history department at Jianghai University. I was admitted as the top student. It's quite nostalgic thinking about it."
Ye Chen smirked, "I recall that the history department at Jianghai University isn't particularly renowned nationally, and the admission standards are quite low. What was your score—500 or 600 points?"
"580 points," Sun Mingyuan replied, his head tilted up slightly in pride.
Despite the history department's lack of fame, Jianghai University ranked among the top five universities nationwide.
He felt a sense of superiority being a student there.
"You had me worried. From the way you spoke, I thought you had scored 780 points," Ye Chen said mockingly.
Sun Mingyuan was boasting about such a modest achievement.
Su Xueqing let out a quiet chuckle, "Brother Sun, you might not be aware, but Ye Chen scored 748 points in the six-school joint exam, securing the top spot in the city. Teacher Chu Yuexi from Jianghai University has extended him an offer of guaranteed admission."
"Ye Chen could choose any department at Jianghai University if he wished."
Sun Mingyuan's face registered disbelief.
He hadn't anticipated Ye Chen's stellar performance.
But he refused to concede his inferiority, scoffing, "Who can tell if that's true? You're friends, after all; you could be making it up."
Just then, several gasps erupted from around Ye Chen.
"Are you Ye Chen from Jianghai No. 1 High School? Hello, I'm a teacher from Jing University. Do you have time to talk? Jianghai University may have offered you a spot, but our school can do the same."
"I'm from Qing University. We can offer you a spot as well. Would you have time for a chat?"
"I teach at a vocational college. Could we talk?"
"You're from a specialized institution, aiming to compete for the city's top student?"
Seeing Ye Chen's astonishment, Su Xueqing clarified, "This place attracts outstanding teachers and students from across the nation. It's quite common to see them here."
Sun Mingyuan watched with envy as Ye Chen was encircled by a crowd.
What bothered him most was his accusation that Ye Chen's identity was fraudulent, which had the unintended effect of making him lose face.
"Brother Sun, do you think Ye Chen is now qualified to work on the history books?" Su Xueqing asked calmly.
Sun Mingyuan could sense the irritation in Su Xueqing's tone. He wouldn't interfere, but he harbored a growing resentment towards Ye Chen.
"I'll see what he's capable of. Just wait, I'll make him regret it."
Ye Chen exchanged greetings with everyone, yet he offered no definitive responses.
"Ye Chen, shall we begin?"
Ye Chen nodded and sat down to start his work.
He was actually revising the material, but since most of the students lacked extensive historical knowledge, errors were bound to occur.
Revisions had to be accurate, but arranging the material allowed for some discrepancies, providing them with a cushion.
The history book Ye Chen was revising was titled Tang Dynasty's Family, chronicling the tales of the Tang Dynasty's princes and their relatives.
The book wasn't particularly significant historically, yet it corroborated many classical texts.
Ye Chen had a flawless version of this book in his Book Sea and had already perused it.
Organizing it was a breeze for Ye Chen, especially with his ability to read a hundred lines at a glance. With just a look, he could spot typos and missing sections.
Ten minutes ticked by.
Su Xueqing observed Ye Chen turning the pages one after the other, feeling somewhat baffled.
Everyone takes time to get acquainted with a book, but Ye Chen seemed to be taking an unusually long time.
However, she wasn't overly curious and refrained from questioning him.
Another half-hour went by, with Ye Chen still flipping through the book.
Finally, Su Xueqing couldn't contain her curiosity: "Ye Chen, haven't you gotten the hang of the history books yet?"
Ye Chen paused, then responded with a smile, "I'm in the process of revising the books."
"That can't be. You're just going through the pages one at a time."
Ye Chen's reading speed was exceptionally fast, so much so that Su Xueqing found it hard to believe anyone could read at such a pace.
Ye Chen chuckled and then flipped to a random page. He scanned it briefly and remarked, "Xueqing, this page has thirteen typos and two missing paragraphs."
He turned another page and noted, "This page has twenty typos, but no missing sections."
Su Xueqing's mouth fell open in sheer astonishment.
She couldn't resist grabbing Ye Chen's history book from him to pore over each word.
Ultimately, she found that Ye Chen had not missed a single detail; he was entirely accurate.
"Ye Chen."
"My reading skills allow me to comprehend a hundred lines at a glance. If I weren't concerned about showing off, I could have revised this entire book in twenty minutes."
Su Xueqing's eyes grew wide, her surprise rendering her speechless.
To read a hundred lines at a glance!
That was incredibly impressive.
Once she had composed herself, Su Xueqing managed to say, "That explains it. I thought you were just messing around!"
"I will certainly treasure the opportunity you've given me."
Ye Chen gazed into Su Xueqing's eyes with deep affection.
Su Xueqing blushed, shyly lowering her head as her heart fluttered.
Was Ye Chen declaring his love?
But we're just in high school; it's not like anything could come of it.
It wasn't as though Su Xueqing hadn't received confessions before. In fact, there were enough to form their own group.
Yet, this was the first time Su Xueqing had ever felt shy.
"What am I even thinking? Ye Chen probably didn't mean anything by it!"
Sun Mingyuan had been closely observing Ye Chen's every action.
He witnessed the exchange between Ye Chen and Su Xueqing.
Sun Mingyuan was seething with anger, but he felt powerless to act. As a scholar, he couldn't just charge forward and assault Ye Chen.
Then, an idea struck him.
Ye Chen was the top student in the city; he would make sure to tarnish Ye Chen's reputation.
He surreptitiously recorded a video of Ye Chen flipping through the book.
To him, Ye Chen wasn't editing; he was just scribbling aimlessly, flipping the pages too quickly.
"Quick, look, Teacher Tang has arrived."
At that moment, an elderly man dressed in a traditional Tang suit approached at a leisurely pace.
His simple attire and every gesture exuded the air of a learned man.
"Good day, Teacher Tang!"
"Good morning, Teacher Tang!"
Nearly all the scholars rose to their feet to greet him with the utmost respect.
"Ye Chen, that's Tang Tianshan. If you manage to gain his favor, or better yet, become his disciple, not even Huang Zhongyu's connections could threaten your standing at the school."
Ye Chen nodded in acknowledgment. Huang Zhongyu had boldly declared his intention to have Ye Chen expelled from Jianghai No. 1 High School.
However, Ye Chen wasn't concerned about Huang Zhongyu's threats in the slightest.
He was confident that with his academic record, any high school in Jianghai would welcome him.
But he had no intention of letting Huang Zhongyu get his way, nor did he wish to let down Su Xueqing's kindness.
"He's going to pose a question later. Make sure you give it your best," he was advised.
Ye Chen responded with a smile, "Will do!"
Teacher Tang took his seat under the watchful eyes of everyone present. Scanning the room, he chuckled and said, "Please, everyone, relax and take your seats. Surely you don't expect me to crane my neck to see you all?"
The crowd chuckled in response, pleasantly surprised to find that the usually stern Teacher Tang had a sense of humor.
