C272 Confirming the Target the Second House of the Lin Family
"Very good," Lin Dong said with a slight smile. He could see that the assassin was truly earnest this time. And how could he not be? Being held underwater in a toilet, gasping for breath, is more than anyone can stand! Even the most resolute assassin couldn't endure such treatment. To the assassin, Lin Dong had become akin to a demon.
At first, he had clung to his assassin's instincts, desperately trying to escape Lin Dong's grasp and retaliate. Even after Lin Dong had inflicted serious injuries on him, he hadn't abandoned the notion. But after being submerged and struggling to breathe, feeling as though death was imminent, the assassin was consumed by fear. After several bouts of suffocation, the thought of resisting or fighting back had vanished. All he wanted was to stay alive and avoid being forced underwater by Lin Dong again.
Lin Dong observed the assassin, soaked from head to toe, and casually tossed a pack of tissues in front of him. "Dry yourself off. Take your time and tell me everything—no need to rush," Lin Dong said, his voice calm and soothing. Yet to the assassin, it sounded like the whispers of a hellish demon.
Shivering, the assassin grabbed the tissues and looked up at Lin Dong, who stood nearby. With an ingratiating tone, he said, "Thank you. It was Xia Wenfeng who sent me to kill you!"
Lin Dong's brow furrowed slightly. "Who is Xia Wenfeng?" he asked. The name was unfamiliar to him.
The assassin hurried to explain, "Oh, she's the second wife of the Lin Family, the wealthiest family in Jiangyang. She's the one who paid me and ordered your assassination!"
"Is that so?" Lin Dong mused, nodding thoughtfully. He recalled the previous assassination attempt at the villa. Could it have been orchestrated by the same person? Hsu Ziyan had mentioned that the will had gone missing, and it was unclear who had obtained it. She was still investigating the matter. Now, with the assassin's straightforward admission that the Lin Family's second wife had commissioned the hit, it seemed almost certain that the will was in Xia Wenfeng's possession.
Lin Dong turned his gaze to the assassin sprawled on the ground and asked, "One last question. Was Xia Wenfeng behind the previous assassination attempt on me as well?"
The killer, looking bewildered, shook his head and replied, "I really don't know."
From his reaction, Lin Dong realized he wouldn't get any useful information.
Nevertheless, Lin Dong was now certain that the second wife was out to get him.
He had a target in mind.
A glint of cold light flickered in Lin Dong's eyes.
He wasn't one to stir up trouble, but when others kept pushing him, sending assassins his way over and over, even a clay figure would reach its breaking point.
And Lin Dong was no clay figure; he was not one to suffer losses lightly!
With Xia Wenfeng from the Lin Family's second branch acting so brazenly, Lin Dong had no intention of letting her off the hook.
He made up his mind.
"Big brother, may I go now?"
The assassin sat on the ground, his expression one of abject misery, his eyes brimming with hope and longing.
His former cold and frenzied demeanor had vanished completely.
In Lin Dong's presence, he was as submissive as a little dog.
Lin Dong could probably have him lie down and bark, and he would do it without a second thought!
All he wanted was to get away from Lin Dong.
The assassin vowed that once he was gone, he would live incognito, perhaps settling down in a small county or village to live out his days in peace, never again to meddle in the affairs of the Jiangyang underworld.
At the assassin's plea, Lin Dong looked down at him, a slight smile on his lips, and said, "You're not free to go just yet."
