C31 You dare to Make My Wife Suffer? You must be Tired of Living!
After settling Zhang Changwen's issue, Lin Chen escorted Zhang Xiaoyu's mother back to their home. He had previously used his Magical Third Eye to assess her health and found that, aside from some weakness, she was in good shape.
"Xiaoyu, your mother's going to be okay," he reassured her. "Just follow this prescription and prepare the medicine for her daily. She should be on the mend in less than two weeks."
Once Lin Chen had written out the prescription, his gaze fell upon the rundown dwelling. It was bare except for a single bed.
"I've just transferred 50,000 yuan to you, and I'm giving you tomorrow off," he said. "Use the time to move your mother into a better living situation. It'll aid in her recovery."
At his words, Zhang Xiaoyu was quick to refuse. "Lin, you've already advanced me a 100,000 yuan salary."
"I can't accept any more money..."
Lin Chen had been a great support to Zhang Xiaoyu, and she didn't want to impose further on his generosity due to her family issues.
"Xiaoyu, this isn't an advance on your salary; it's a bonus," he clarified. "Remember that doctor, Zhang Changwen, from the hospital? He nearly caused my mother-in-law's death. If it weren't for your situation with your mother, I wouldn't have known where to find him."
Lin Chen deftly offered an excuse, knowing that otherwise, Zhang Xiaoyu's kind nature would prevent her from accepting the money.
"Big Brother Lin, thank you so much," Zhang Xiaoyu murmured, her head bowed as tears welled up and spilled over.
She could see through Lin Chen's words; he was simply finding a way for her to accept the money without feeling guilty. Throughout her life, aside from her mother, no one had shown her genuine concern. Particularly today, without Lin Chen's intervention, she would have been at the mercy of Zhang Changwen and his ilk, and her mother's life would have been at risk.
Lin Chen was taken aback by her tears; he could handle anything but a girl's tears.
"Hey... Xiaoyu, please don't cry," he implored. "If I've said anything wrong, just tell me. I promise I'll make it right."
Lin Chen spoke to Zhang Xiaoyu in a fluster. "Big Brother Lin, you haven't done anything wrong. It's all my fault. I'm the one who's caused you trouble," Zhang Xiaoyu said, wiping away her tears and looking at Lin Chen with a face full of regret.
Trouble? Lin Chen paused, taking in Zhang Xiaoyu's tearful, guilt-ridden eyes. It dawned on him that she must be referring to the incident at the hospital.
"Xiaoyu, tell me about your father," Lin Chen steered the conversation in a different direction, hoping to avoid any further tears.
"Father?" Although Zhang Xiaoyu was hesitant to bring it up, she replied honestly, "My mom told me that she and my dad had me because of an accident. While she was pregnant, my dad was really good to her. But after I was born and he learned I was a girl, he changed completely."
"He constantly mistreated my mom and liked to fool around with other women. A few years ago, he stumbled upon stone gambling and got hooked..."
Lin Chen was puzzled by Zhang Xiaoyu's account. "Stone gambling? What's that?" He remembered seeing various forms of gambling on TV back in the mountains but had no idea what stone gambling entailed.
"Stone gambling is betting on jade," Zhang Xiaoyu explained. "I've read online that some natural jade is encased within stones. If you bet correctly, cutting the jade out of the stone could net you a fortune."
Lin Chen, not fully understanding why he was asking, still pressed on. "Xiaoyu, are you saying that if you cut jade out of that worthless stone, you can make a killing in no time?"
He excitedly took Zhang Xiaoyu's hand. If stone gambling was as lucrative as she described, could he, with his magical third eye, literally pick up money by the sackful?
"Brother Lin, you're not thinking of trying your luck at stone gambling, are you?" Zhang Xiaoyu asked, alarmed. "No, no! It's a losing game for most! My dad says it's a gamble that can make you rich or poor in a single stroke. While some may get lucky and earn money, the majority end up losing everything, even their families."
Lin Chen's agitation filled Zhang Xiaoyu with a pang of regret. She wished she hadn't brought up the topic—if Brother Lin ever got caught up in it, she'd be wracked with guilt forever.
"Ahem... Xiaoyu, it's getting late, and I need to get back to my wife and kids."
"You should get some rest too."
Lin Chen could tell that Zhang Xiaoyu was concerned for him, but he couldn't divulge much about the Magical Third Eye.
Half an hour later, Lin Chen returned to the factory.
"Qian, where are my wife and kids?"
Not finding Ann Lan in the factory, Lin Chen turned to Qian Duoduo with a puzzled look.
"Boss, shortly after you left, Director Ann took your child and headed back to the company."
"I couldn't persuade her otherwise."
Lin Chen's anxiety spiked at Qian Duoduo's words.
Had that madwoman lost her mind? Without him there, what if Chairman Lee and the others harbored ill intentions toward his wife and child?
"Let's head to Ann's Group immediately."
"Forget the factory for now."
After instructing Qian Duoduo and the others, Lin Chen revved up the car and raced toward Ann's Group.
Thankfully, the factory wasn't too far from Ann's Group.
Soon, Lin Chen stood outside the CEO's office at Ann's Group. Through the glass, he saw Ann Lan in a towering rage, papers flying off the desk.
His expression grew stern, and he made his way to the security department.
"Qian, Wang, notify all the executives that there's an urgent meeting."
Lin Chen commanded, his face a mask of seriousness.
Pregnant women shouldn't get overly upset—it could harm the baby. And now, someone had pushed the madwoman to this extreme. Was this not a blatant attack on his unborn daughter?
"Calling an emergency executive meeting?"
"Boss, we're just from security. Do we even have the authority for that?"
Qian Duoduo looked bewildered as he cautioned Lin Chen.
"Just do as I've told you."
"If anyone resists, they'll answer to me—and my electric baton!"
"If anyone steps out of line, they'll get a taste of the stun baton!" Lin Chen declared with an icy tone.
Qian Duoduo shivered as he realized Lin Chen wasn't kidding, a spark of excitement igniting in his eyes. The boss truly had guts—bold enough to stand up to the company's top brass on behalf of a mere security guard. Qian would have doubted such a tale if he hadn't witnessed it himself.
Reflecting on the disdain he'd felt from the company's executives towards their security team, Qian wasn't anxious; he was actually thrilled by the prospect of turning the tables. "Brothers, arm yourselves with electric batons and follow my lead!" he rallied the security guards.
"To any of those high-and-mighty types who won't listen, show no mercy—just give them a good thrashing and that'll settle it," he continued, his voice rising with fervor.
"After all, should the sky come crashing down, we've got the boss to hold it up for us!" With that, Qian Duoduo brandished his stun baton and called out to his team, ready to take on whatever came their way.
