C5 He Invited Lin Chen to be the Director of the Hospital

Watching Lin Chen storm off, a look of hesitation flickered across Ann Lan's exquisite face.

As the relative of a patient, her instincts inclined her to trust the doctor.

Yet Lin Chen had administered a few acupuncture needles, rousing her mother from unconsciousness and speaking with such conviction.

She found herself torn, unsure whether to take Lin Chen's words to heart.

"Miss Ann, well done!"

"If you don't trust me, that's one thing, but to let that madman assault me like this?"

"Do you really think I, Zhang Changwen, am so easily pushed around?"

Dr. Zhang didn't take Lin Chen's final warning seriously.

Feeling insulted, he was determined to reclaim his dignity.

"Lanlan, perhaps we should consider taking your aunt to another hospital for a checkup?"

"It wouldn't be much trouble."

"What if Lin Chen is actually telling the truth?"

Sun Lili glanced at Dr. Zhang's retreating figure, her brow furrowed, as she gently urged Ann Lan.

"My mother's condition isn't stable enough for a transfer right now."

"Lili, could you please fetch Uncle Hsu for me?"

Ann Lan paused briefly before continuing.

With her mother's life hanging in the balance, she had to proceed with caution, regardless of the truth in Lin Chen's claims.

An hour later, upon viewing her mother's latest medical report, Ann Lan's face turned a ghastly pale.

"Zhang Changwen!"

"You're quite something, aren't you? A doctor who not only neglects to save lives but also conspires against my mother's life in secret!"

Ann Lan's teeth clenched with a grinding sound.

The report revealed her mother was cancer-free.

Her near-death state was solely due to the irresponsible medication prescribed by her attending physician, Zhang Changwen!

"Lan, normally, there would be no hope for your mother's condition."

"But now, she just needs some time to rest and she'll be back to her old self."

"I can't imagine who this miraculous doctor is; his medical expertise is astounding!"

In the hospital room, an elderly doctor expressed his amazement to Ann Lan.

"Uncle Hsu, could there be some mistake?"

"That young man is barely in his twenties; how could he possibly be a miraculous doctor?"

"Besides, it looked like he hardly did anything—just a few simple silver needle insertions."

Ann Lan paused, a question forming instinctively on her lips.

Hsu Qiang was the deputy director of A City's No.2 People's Hospital and had been a longtime friend of Ann Lan's father. Had No.1 People's Hospital not been more renowned, Ann Lan would have entrusted her mother to Hsu Qiang's care long ago.

"In his early twenties?"

At Ann Lan's description, a look of astonishment swept over Hsu Qiang's face. The mere use of silver needles had snatched her mother from death's clutches—an act that spoke volumes of the healer's formidable skills.

"Lan, could you share that miraculous doctor's contact with me?" Uncle Hsu inquired. "I'd like to invite him to lead our Traditional Medicine Department. With him on board, I'm confident that our department at No.2 People's Hospital will become a household name throughout A City."

Hsu Qiang had initially referred to Lin Chen as a godly doctor in a business-like exaggeration. But now, he was genuinely awestruck by Lin Chen's expertise. To revive someone with just silver needles—wasn't that the mark of a true medical sage?

"Invite him to head the Traditional Medicine Department?" Ann Lan was visibly taken aback.

She knew Uncle Hsu well; his approach to medicine was nothing short of rigorous. His proposal was no offhand comment.

"As long as he possesses the true skill, I... I might even offer him the deputy director position," Hsu Qiang declared after a moment's pause, his tone earnest.

Deputy director?

Ann Lan and Sun Lili exchanged glances, both sets of eyes mirroring incredulity. Could Lin Chen, with his laid-back demeanor, really have impressed Uncle Hsu to such an extent?

"Cough... Lanlan, I think Subdecanal Hsu is onto something," Sun Lili interjected, giving a knowing look. "If Lin Chen's medical prowess is as exceptional as it seems, his presence at the hospital would be a godsend for many patients. Maybe you should have a word with him?"

With a discreet cough and a suggestive wink, Sun Lili signaled her support. As close friends, Ann Lan grasped the full intent behind Sun Lili's words.

She was being asked to seek out Lin Chen and offer an apology.

"Uncle Hsu, I'll go and see what I can do," Ann Lan assured Hsu Qiang. "But I can't promise he'll agree."

She nodded at Hsu Qiang, then turned to Sun Lili. "Lili, could you help with my mom's transfer paperwork later? And while you're at it, call the cops on that scumbag Zhang Changwen!"

With that, Ann Lan headed straight out of the hospital.

Outside, the bustling street left her feeling adrift. She didn't even have Lin Chen's number—how was she supposed to find him in this sea of faces? Recalling the harsh words she'd hurled at him back at the hospital, a mix of bitterness and regret washed over her.

Truth be told, if their roles were reversed, she doubted she'd ever give Lin Chen the time of day, let alone help him. Why should she endure such insults for trying to help?

Shaking off the thought, Ann Lan quickened her pace down the street, hoping to locate Lin Chen.

Unbeknownst to her, Zhang Changwen had been tailing her since she left the hospital. Meanwhile, Lin Chen was sitting in a KFC across from the hospital entrance.

Catching sight of Zhang Changwen in the distance, Lin Chen bit into a drumstick with gusto, grumbling, "That woman's out of her mind."

"I just exposed that jerk in the hospital, and here she is, wandering out alone. What, is she looking to give the guy a chance to finish off her and her son?"

Although Ann Lan's earlier outburst had left Lin Chen fuming, his anger had subsided since leaving the hospital. After all, as a family member of a patient, her reaction was understandable in the heat of the moment.

Lin Chen wiped his mouth with a napkin and got to his feet, trailing after her. He knew Zhang Changwen was up to no good. As a security guard for Ann's Group, Lin Chen figured he'd better save Ann Lan first and then suggest she throw in a little bonus for his trouble. Maybe then he could treat himself to some time with a few models.

As dusk fell, Ann Lan found herself wandering into a dimly lit alley, unaware of the dangers that might be lurking.

Feeling the pain in her feet and overwhelmed by the recent troubles at Ann's Group and with her mother, Ann Lan crouched down, burying her face in her knees, and began to sob.

"Asshole, I just cursed at you a bit, and you're already pissed off!"

"Do you have any idea how much heartache I've endured over the past six months since I got pregnant?"

In the shadows, Lin Chen and Zhang Changwen watched Ann Lan's breakdown with contrasting reactions. Zhang Changwen realized that Ann Lan's retreat into this dim alley was the opportunity he'd been waiting for. Lin Chen, on the other hand, was visibly annoyed.

"What does your pregnancy have to do with me?"

"You act as if I'm the father of the child!"

This woman must have lost her senses with the pregnancy.

I'm just playing the part of a dad, not actually being one!

While Lin Chen was internally ranting about Ann Lan, a jarring screech of brakes echoed from the end of the alley. As the car came to a halt, Zhang Changwen and his companions sprang into action, forcefully shoving Ann Lan into the vehicle.

Lin Chen's face turned pale with shock.

"Damn it all!"

"We agreed to tail her, and you pull a fast one on me?"

Cursing under his breath, Lin Chen wasted no more time and bolted after the car.
