C2 The full moon night will come again
After being forced into the room by my parents and locking the door for me, I felt a little apprehensive. I inadvertently recalled the words of the old Elementary Scholar from a few years ago and thought to myself, Could it be that the pretty girl from the temple has come to find me?
After the previous incident, I had also carefully thought about what I had seen. Back then, there was water in the wooden bucket, but when the girl came out of the water, not a single drop of hair was touched. That was the reason why I believed the Elementary Scholar's words.
I lay in bed, frightened, but the feast had been too busy to sleep that night, and the exhaustion swept over me and quickly passed.
After I fell asleep, I dreamt that I was lying on the bed staring out the window in a daze. The moonlight was very bright, and I could get used to seeing the scene inside the house clearly after a while. At this time, I suddenly heard a rooster squawk in front of my house, just like the one I had when I was about to die.
I was so scared that I slipped under the covers, not daring to breathe, and after a while cold sweat broke out on my forehead. I didn't expect that a few seconds after the rooster screamed, I would suddenly hear someone calling my name from the window!
"Yang Yu, are you there? …"
Her voice was very soft, like a gentle young lady in the prime of her youth, whispering to me. At the same time that my back felt chills, curiosity arose in my heart. Such a pleasant voice, just who is it calling me?
The sound came from the window. I lifted my blanket and held my breath as I looked at the window. Initially, the window was empty, but after looking at it for a few seconds, I realised that there was something dark floating in the breeze!
"Yang Yu, are you not here?"
The voice came from the window again, and I was immediately stunned. I saw that most of the things flying around the window had covered up the window, leaving behind a black shadow. Things dancing with the wind should be women's hair!
It was not over yet. While the shadow called out to me, it lingered by the window for a few seconds, stopping in the middle of the window. Then it called out my name, and then it paced back and forth.
Sweat was pouring down my forehead. I felt my pores grow cold and my hair seemed to stand on end. I didn't dare to reply to my parents' words. Looking at the dark figure, I couldn't move at all. I panted heavily.
The shadow lingered for a while and stopped calling out my name. Two thin shadows slowly emerged from the side of the shadow. They were a pair of hands that were pressed against the window. It was unknown how long the shadow stayed there before suddenly disappearing, leaving two handprints behind.
When I opened my eyes, I found that my eyes were staring straight at the window. My entire body was covered in sweat, and thinking back to the dream that I had just had, I thought that it was just a dream. However, just as I was about to heave a sigh of relief, I suddenly saw two handprints on the window!
At this moment, the chickens in the village were already crowing. There was a grey light outside the window, and I suspected that I was seeing things, but after rubbing my eyes a few times, I could see that the handprint was still on the window. The windows of the old houses like ours are usually made of transparent oilcloth.
I flipped over to turn on the light and walked over to take a look. My whole body was covered in cold sweat, this wasn't just a pair of handprints, it was a pair of handprints without any lines. That dream just now was real, no, it wasn't a dream!
I rapped on the door like a ghost to wake my parents, then told them about the dream and the handprints on the window, and Dad's face changed on the spot, saying it was lucky the old scholar had taught us the method. Then, his father called the old scholar and told him.
The old Elementary Scholar was silent for a while, before calling his father out to check if the rooster was still alive. My father went out with his cell phone, followed by a cry of alarm, and we went out to find that not only was the rooster dead, but even one of the two black dogs was dead, and both the rooster and the black dog had their eyes open, as if they were staring at something before they died!
My father slammed his cell phone shut in panic and quickly dragged me back into the house. He used my cell phone to call the old Elementary Scholar, his voice trembling as he told him the situation.
The old scholar was unable to speak for a long time before finally saying, "It seems that I have underestimated her. It seems that changing the roosters and dogs would be useless, and she will definitely come again tonight. How about this, I'll come back immediately. You prepare three catties of rice, five red strings, and a broken bowl. Go and find some eaves soil from the old house, I'll definitely be able to use them tomorrow."
After Dad agreed to hang up the phone, I fidgeted in my chair, my face turning pale with fright. Mom told me to go back and get some sleep, and the old Elementary Scholar would be back soon. However, I didn't dare to go back to my room. I would get goosebumps whenever I saw the handprints. In the end, I could only sit in the living room and pray for the old Elementary Scholar to return.
My mother sat with me in the room. She even took three pillars of fragrance and burned them in front of me. I smelled the fragrance and felt inexplicably better. Dad walked around the house and told my mother to prepare rice and red thread. He took a broken porcelain bowl and went out to find soil on the roof.
At noon, the old man brought a bag to my house. He looked at the dead rooster and the dead black dog on the ground and frowned, not saying a word.
After a long time, the old Elementary Scholar told my mother to stew the rooster and eat it while the black dog hung it on the gate of the courtyard. When it was dark, my parents would go to someone else's house to sleep, and when they went out, they would bring a hoe with them and walk out of the door. Then, they would bury the black dog at the door, expose its head, and kowtow to the black dog three times before they left.
The old Elementary Scholar glanced at my eyelids, intentionally pushing my mother away and asking if I was still a virgin. I couldn't answer him. After hesitating for a while, I was scolded by him. He told me to hurry up and tell him that it was related to whether I could survive the night.
I asked him, "That, is using your left hand a good idea?" In the end, the old Elementary Scholar stroked his white beard and left. In the afternoon, the old Elementary Scholar and my father returned. The old Elementary Scholar brought a cute little black dog, while my father brought a bowl of soil.
After entering the house, the old Elementary Scholar asked my father, "This roof looks very fierce. Where did you get it from?"
My father said he got it under my grandmother's mud house, which my grandmother and grandfather used to live in, and then my grandmother and my grandfather got into a fight, and my grandmother poisoned my grandfather and herself, and they never came to the mud house again. My father said it was under my grandmother's mud house, and my father said it was under my grandmother's mud house, where my grandmother and my grandfather used to live together.
The old Elementary Scholar said this was a good idea. If I can get through tonight, I'll have to rely on myself for tomorrow night's events.
Next, the old scholar tied the little black dog's neck firmly with a red string. He tied one of the red strings to the dog's whip (the dog's genitals) and the other end to the middle finger of my left hand. Then he told me to go out and walk the dog in the sunlight.
When night came, his parents listened to the Elementary Scholar's words. They buried the dead dog in front of the door, exposing its wide-eyed head. After bowing three times, they left. It was night time, and looking at the dead dog's head at the door, they felt an inexplicable fear.
The old Elementary Scholar said that the handprint was a mark made by 'her'. Tonight, he would show up at my window, fuse the little black dog's anger with me, and since the little black dog and I were connected by a red line, I would lie under the bed. When someone called out to me, I would immediately close my eyes and think of nothing.
The old Elementary Scholar sat with me in the living room until after ten at night, and I was afraid to think about it, and asked if the old Elementary Scholar would still be there. Instead of answering me, he called me into the room and gave me a blanket under the bed.
The little black dog was tied up by him and placed on my bed. After that, the old Elementary Scholar instructed me once again, "Remember, when you see a red line flying towards you from the window, don't vent your anger; when you see a red cloth falling under the bed, roll over immediately; when you hear someone call your name, close your eyes; when you hear a dog scream, run!"
The old Elementary Scholar's words sent shivers down my spine. I wanted to run, but the old Elementary Scholar scolded me and told me that I should do as he said if I wanted to live. Afterwards, the old Elementary Scholar said that he had left and would come back tomorrow to see if I was dead.
I lay shivering under the bed and stared at the handprints on the window as if I were afraid they would fly at me. I was covered in sweat.
At the beginning, the little black dog was still barking non-stop. I still felt that it had a companion, but after about half an hour, the little dog suddenly stopped breathing, and didn't make any more sounds!
At this moment, the barking of a dog could be heard again in the village. It gradually approached my house. My heart pounded violently as beads of sweat the size of beans fell from my forehead. She's coming!
