C17 The Real Danger

Xianyue watched the unfolding scene with a touch of anxiety, but her confidence in her son's recent display of intelligence and wit reassured her. She observed him, unabashedly flirting with the young woman before him.

"I'll ask you one more time, where did you get this?" Tang Yuxian's voice was laced with a chill. Gu Feng knew he had to provide an answer or she might resort to violence. Grinning, he scratched the back of his head, "I'll tell you, but you can't spread it around, okay?"

"Out with it!"

"Well, my mother and I were traveling when we encountered an uncle—let's just say he was quite lecherous. He fixated on my mother's chest for the longest time, and then he tossed this thing to me, claiming, 'Keep this, and it'll ensure you find a fair-skinned beauty.'" Gu Feng gestured towards Tang Yuxian's chest as he spoke.

He continued, "At first, I didn't believe the man, but he seemed to possess the same level of skill as you. As he was leaving, he remarked, 'If not for your mother's beauty, I wouldn't bother giving this to you.' You understand what I'm getting at, right?"

After finishing his story, Xianyue nodded in agreement. Gu Feng pointed to the brocade bag in her hands and teased, "My dear, take care not to ruin it. I plan to give this to my future wife. Unless, of course, you're considering the position?"

"Get lost!"

Tang Yuxian hurled another insult at Gu Feng, throwing the object at his face as she fought to contain her rage. The last thing she wanted was for anyone to discover that her belongings had been stolen while she was bathing, or worse, that she might have been watched. She could only surmise that the uncle Gu Feng mentioned must have been quite depraved to offer such a gift for the sake of his mother's looks.

She couldn't help but wonder if there was something between Gu Feng's mother and that uncle. Was it as Gu Feng suggested, that the uncle had been involved with his mother, or had she allowed it to protect her son? With these thoughts, Tang Yuxian shook her head, her cheeks coloring with a hint of embarrassment.

Gu Feng hadn't anticipated that Tang Yuxian would actually return the item to him. Once it was back in his possession, he wasted no time in stashing it away. The item was too important to lose, and he figured that once he grew stronger, he could reveal it again. He imagined the look on Tang Yuxian's face when he confessed to being the one who had spied on her bathing and stolen her belongings. The thought alone gave him a real sense of achievement.

"Do you still remember what that person looked like?" Tang Yuxian wondered to herself, determined to eliminate that man at all costs.

"I remember. Why do you ask? You haven't fallen for him, have you? Though it does make sense, a strong couple indeed," Gu Feng said with a sly grin.

"Get lost!" Tang Yuxian snapped. "I was just asking out of curiosity!"

Gu Feng then started to spin a tale about the character, not expecting Tang Yuxian to actually believe him. It appeared that this young woman, barely in her twenties, was quite gullible—a simple story had easily duped her. Gu Feng had assumed she would demand the brocade bag back upon seeing it, but she seemed to dismiss it entirely, rendering his plan moot once more.

Not one to give up, Gu Feng hatched a new scheme. Noticing Tang Yuxian's persistent inquiries about the so-called uncle, he said with a smile, "You know, there's a distinctive feature on that uncle that makes him easy to identify. Would you like to know what it is?"

As expected, Tang Yuxian's interest was piqued, her eyebrows arching in anticipation. "Tell me!" she implored.

"If you hunt down a few second or third-tier soulstones for me, I'll spill the beans. Or you could just give me the silver notes you're carrying—two thousand taels should cover the cost of a soulstone," Gu Feng mused, thinking about the soulstones he could purchase with that amount of silver.

"You're practically a highwayman!" Tang Yuxian retorted, visibly irritated, before asking, "Can't you ask for less?"

"Hunting down low-level Soul Beasts should be a walk in the park for someone with your formidable abilities," Gu Feng remarked, considering her impressive strength.

"I don't want to kill, but there's an issue with the Scarlet Red itself!" Tang Yuxian said as she gently caressed the longsword in her hand.

"Scarlet Red?" Gu Feng mused, eyeing the crimson sheath and longsword in her delicate hand. "This sword certainly has a problem. Could it possibly be a Divine Weapon? Maybe I should poison her and then take the Divine Weapon for myself."

On the day Gu Feng had fortuitously acquired two third-tier soulstones, he also collected some poison. The cold-hearted Gu Feng glanced at the scarlet longsword she held and then at Tang Yuxian's captivating eyes, ultimately shaking his head in resignation.

It seemed that Tang Yuxian had narrowly escaped death, much like the day she had intended to kill them both. Perhaps it was destiny. If Tang Yuxian hadn't been such a beauty, Gu Feng might have actually gone through with poisoning her.

Noticing Gu Feng's dismissive shake of the head, Tang Yuxian assumed he was underestimating her weapon. "This sword is named Scarlet Rainbow. It's of the Spiritual Grade. The craftsman who made it claimed it can evolve on its own, potentially reaching the Heaven Grade."

"Grades of weapons?"

Gu Feng wasn't well-versed in weaponry, but as a novel enthusiast, he tried to dredge up what he knew. Soon enough, he pieced together that within the Tamura Empire, weapons were categorized as follows: starting with the Low Grade for ordinary weapons like the one he possessed, then ascending through Human Grade, Spiritual Grade, Earth Grade, and Heaven Grade. There were even whispers of the Emperor wielding a King Grade weapon, with each grade further divided into Lower, Middle, and Upper Tiers.

A weapon capable of evolving was an exceedingly rare treasure, seldom seen even once in a century. Gu Feng grasped Tang Yuxian's implication: such a weapon might not be suited for excessive slaughter or bloodshed, lest it transform into a demonic weapon, heavy with the aura of death. That would be an ill fate for the beautiful wielder.

"Ah, never mind. I'll do you a favor. You'll owe me one in return. How does that sound?" Since Gu Feng couldn't persuade her to assist him in locating more soulstone resources, he shifted the conversation towards the currency of favors.

"That's fine, as long as it's not excessive," Tang Yuxian nodded in agreement.

"Hmm, I remember now. That sleazy old man had a black mole on his face with some really gross hairs growing out of it," Gu Feng said, pointing to a spot on his own face.

Little did he know that his words would trigger a manhunt by the Darkpikes Sect for every man with a black mole in the Tamura Empire, young and old alike. The instigator of this calamity was none other than our protagonist. Men with moles either went into hiding or resorted to cutting off their moles with sharp instruments, leaving scars in hopes of avoiding death at the hands of the Darkpikes Sect.

Several days later.

Gu Feng and his companions had finally emerged from the mountainous forest. They traversed the range from Pan City and made their way to the vicinity of Osesey. Gu Feng recalled that just beyond Osesey lay a small town, home to his grandmother's house, a bustling town with a population well over a hundred thousand. Despite being referred to as a small town, due to the overcrowding in Osesey City, this nearby town had become a haven for many merchants to live and work in peace.

Upon reaching the main road, Tang Yuxian disregarded Gu Feng's pleas to stay and soared toward Osesey like a swift swallow, leaving Gu Feng and his mother to make their way toward Jade Sea City at a slower pace. Carrying a bundle of soft-scaled skin, they drew many curious glances. Some onlookers contemplated robbing Gu Feng, but the proximity to Osesey and the steady flow of travelers on the official road, coupled with Gu Feng and his mother's noble appearance, dissuaded them from acting on their impulses.

As Osesey City came into view, Gu Feng couldn't contain his excitement. He patted the tens of thousands of silver notes on his person, musing that if he used them to purchase a soulstone, he would likely reach the third level of Body Tempering very soon. The prospect of attaining the strength that came with the third level of Body Tempering thrilled him. Once he broke through to that level, he knew he could continue to cultivate using the vital spirit within him, even without additional resources.

At that moment, an elderly man appeared on the main road, a man who seemed to be in his seventies. He smiled and positioned himself in front of Gu Feng and his mother.

"I've been waiting for you two for quite some time. Impressive, surviving the forests and mountains – you're quite fortunate. But..."

Upon noticing the old man, Gu Feng's eyes narrowed, and he instinctively stepped back, scanning the surroundings for the expert. Unfortunately, Yuxian was nowhere to be found, likely having already made her way into Osesey City.

"Fifth Elder, Gu Tian sent you, didn't he?" Gu Feng asked, striving to maintain his composure.

"Hehe!" The Fifth Elder didn't confirm who had sent him, merely chuckling as he fixed his gaze on Gu Feng. "Impressive indeed. You've reached the second level of Body Tempering in just a few days. It seems my arrival is timely."

Gu Feng was aware that Gu Tian would send an assassin, but he hadn't anticipated that the assassin would be a family patriarch, his own Fifth Uncle, a true Nascent Flow Realm powerhouse. The elder's strength was leagues beyond Gu Feng's, leaving him no chance to resist. However, Gu Feng remained calm, confident that any issue could be resolved once identified.

"I've already left the Gu family. Must you pursue me to the death? Gu Tian is your nephew, and am I not as well? Or is it because I'm not the Patriarch, and thus, without value?" Gu Feng spoke to the Fifth Uncle with a detached tone. "I assure you, if I reclaim leadership of the Gu family one day, I will hand over all its assets to you, allowing you to manage the family's finances."

"Once I kill you and your father, all these things will be mine!" The Fifth Elder, thinking of Gu Tian as his biological son, couldn't help but reveal a smile as he addressed Gu Feng.

"And what of Gu Tian? Don't try to tell me he's your illegitimate son!" Gu Feng challenged upon realizing the Fifth Elder had made no mention of targeting Gu Tian.

"My boy, you're quite astute. Sadly, this time next year will mark the anniversary of your demise. But rest assured, once you and your father are gone, I'll take good care of your mother." After the Fifth Elder spoke, his gaze lingered on Xianyue, his mind drifting back to the intimate encounter he had shared with Gu Tian's mother, his thoughts taking an unsavory turn.

"You're truly formidable. I can't decide if it's your strength or if Gu Mong is just that pathetic. He doesn't even realize his own wife was taken by another man, and he's been unwittingly raising someone else's son. It's hilarious. I've seen some stupid pigs, but never one quite this foolish," Gu Feng said, bursting into laughter.

Xianyue's expression darkened. There was a time, before Gu Mong had left the Gu family, when she might have harbored some fondness for him. But ever since her son had nearly been beaten to death, she had become utterly disillusioned with Gu Mong, feeling reduced to nothing more than a childbearing tool for the Gu family.

In that moment, Xianyue's only thought was to protect her son. She stepped in front of Gu Feng, her delicate fingers pointing accusingly at the Fifth Elder. "Fifth Elder, aren't you worried about the Patriarch finding out about this?"

"Find out? Who would let him know? If he were to find out, do you think I'd be here right now? If I eliminate both of you, even if the Patriarch becomes suspicious, what can he do without evidence? Remember, I am an elder, his fifth uncle," the Fifth Elder said with a smirk, eyeing Xianyue and her son. "Once Gu Tian is officially the Patriarch, Gu Mong's days are numbered."

Hearing the Fifth Elder's words, a man seldom seen in the Gu family, Gu Feng felt a sense of despair. The Fifth Elder was at the fourth level of cultivation and could easily snuff out his life. What was he to do? Was he truly fated to die here?

"Feng, you go first. I'll buy you some time," Xianyue said, shielding Gu Feng behind her.

"With your level of cultivation, I doubt you could even dodge a single palm strike. Where do you think we could possibly run to?" Gu Feng shook his head, then addressed the elder, "Fifth Elder, is it? Before I meet my end, could you grant me one last request?"
