C19 The Nineteenth Chapter of Saving One
Liu Xu strode over and untied her ropes before stepping outside to bind the two kidnappers together. Once they were secured, he returned to the study and gently assisted Chu Menghan, whose limbs had gone numb, into a chair.
Noticing her tears on the brink of falling, Liu Xu let out a sigh and said, "Miss Chu, with all your wealth, why don't you take better care of your safety? If I hadn't come across you today, you might have been in real trouble... Hmm, hmm."
He was cut off mid-sentence as Chu Menghan, who had been perched on the chair, suddenly lunged into his arms, embracing him firmly.
"Liu, Liu Xu, are you an angel?" she asked, her voice muffled against his chest as tears cascaded down her cheeks. Between sobs, she choked out, "Did God send you to protect me?"
Big sister, this isn't a movie. An angel? Why not just call me Ultraman? Liu Xu thought to himself, rolling his eyes. It dawned on him that Chu Menghan was a naïve young woman, likely believing in the inherent goodness of people. Otherwise, how could someone so affluent not have a bodyguard, especially after being kidnapped for hours with no one noticing?
This was Liu Xu's first experience of being clung to by a weeping girl. He felt like he was holding a bundle of cotton. Chu Menghan's tense frame and the warmth and scent of her hair made him feel uneasy.
Seeing her cry so heartbreakingly, Liu Xu couldn't bring himself to scold her. Instead, he offered awkward consolation, "There, there, everything's alright now. No more tears, I'm here."
After a long embrace, Chu Menghan's tears subsided. Realizing her behavior might have been a bit much, she pulled away from Liu Xu's arms, rubbing her eyes and murmuring an apology, "I...I'm sorry."
"Let it go, let it go. I guess I'm in your debt," Liu Xu replied with resignation. "Anyway, earlier I overheard you mention an agreement. What exactly happened today?"
With no desire to conceal the truth, especially after Liu Xu's timely rescue, Chu Menghan opened up without reservation. "I was overseeing an acquisition project for the company. Though the deal was completed some time ago, the share distribution hasn't been made public yet. Those two are direct beneficiaries of the transaction. They must have been dissatisfied with my decision and resorted to threats in a desperate attempt to force a change in the share allocation."
As she spoke, gratitude flashed in her eyes as she looked at Liu Xu. "I owe you one. If they had gotten their way, the company would have lost millions."
All she thought about was the company, never her own safety?
Liu Xu was at a loss for words, but considering they weren't that close, he refrained from commenting further. He simply nodded, held back his questions, and dialed the police.
Soon after, the police arrived. The officer in charge seemed to recognize Chu Menghan's identity and didn't bother taking them to the station. After taking their statements right there, he escorted the criminals away.
With everything resolved, Liu Xu was about to take his leave.
But before he could speak, his phone began to vibrate.
He checked the screen, and his brow furrowed at the message.
"You've become entangled in Chu Menghan's crisis. This kind-hearted and naive girl needs your help to avert danger. Succeed, and you'll earn a random reward along with Spirit Pet Points."
Glancing at Chu Menghan, still visibly shaken, Liu Xu was hit by a wave of confusion.
The criminals were already in police custody. What danger could possibly remain?
