At that moment, Hsu Xiaoyue noticed the dog owner's heightened emotions and quickly interjected, "Mr. Ma, please don't panic. If this issue is related to us in any way, I assure you I'll take full responsibility."
"What do you mean 'if'? It's clearly your fault!" the young man persisted, his frustration unabated. "What are you waiting for? Go get the Pet Doctor, now!"
"Well, the thing is..."
Today, of all days, the Pet Doctor at our shop had taken the day off. Even if we managed to reach him, he probably wouldn't arrive in time. The dog's condition seemed to be deteriorating rapidly; any further delay could be disastrous.
The more Hsu Xiaoyue dwelled on the situation, the more frantic she became, feeling utterly helpless.
That's when Liu Xu, who had been quiet until now, stepped forward.
He offered Hsu Xiaoyue a reassuring smile before addressing the middle-aged man, "No need to call for the Pet Doctor—I can treat this ailment."
For a strong-willed and independent woman like Hsu Xiaoyue, placing trust in a stranger was no simple feat.
Especially since Liu Xu had previously been caught shirking his duties, which hadn't exactly left a stellar first impression.
Despite her anxiety, Hsu Xiaoyue was skeptical of Liu Xu's sudden offer to assist. She suspected he was more interested in showing off than actually helping.
She gave the young man a strained smile, then firmly grasped Liu Xu's arm, pulling him aside to whisper a stern warning, "What are you up to? You couldn't even handle cleaning a cage properly, and now you're posing as a Pet Doctor? If something goes wrong, the store is liable for damages. Please, no more disruptions, understand?"
Hsu Xiaoyue, though only slightly older than Liu Xu, spoke with a seasoned authority, her tone seasoned with experience from frequently reprimanding the shop's younger staff.
Liu Xu, grasping her concerns, didn't take offense. Instead, he smiled and posed a question, "Ms. Yue, if I successfully resolve this issue, would you consider making me a permanent employee? And, ideally, assign me tasks other than daily cage cleaning?"
After giving it considerable thought, he had made his decision. Initially, he was merely testing the software's effectiveness, so the distinction between being a temp or a full-time employee wasn't a big deal to him. But now, having witnessed the program's extraordinary capabilities, he was inclined to stick around.
Staying here would certainly make interacting with pets a breeze. And despite Hsu Xiaoyue's less-than-stellar temperament, she was easy on the eyes. By remaining here, he'd stand out like a green shoot amidst a field of flowers—perhaps even resolving his single status in the process.
Hsu Xiaoyue looked taken aback. She scrutinized Liu Xu, noting his direct gaze and composed demeanor, which didn't seem indicative of deceit. After a brief pause, she inquired, "Do you truly have confidence in your method? No, first explain your treatment approach. I need to consider it."
Liu Xu nodded affirmatively. "My approach as a Pet Doctor is unique. I focus on observing the pets' emotions, engaging with them to grasp their thoughts, and then providing tailored treatment."
Hsu Xiaoyue bristled at his words. She had been in the industry for quite some time and had never encountered such a therapeutic strategy. She was skeptical, to say the least. Yet, with the pet owner present, she refrained from causing a scene, instead bottling up her frustration. "Fine, I'll watch your treatment. But one condition: don't feed the dog anything without permission. And if you fail to cure it, you're out of here immediately."
"Ms Hsu, shouldn't there be a reward for success, not just punishment for failure?" Liu Xu asked, shrugging. "Before I begin, can you tell me if curing the pet will secure me a permanent position?"
"What's with all the whispering? What's the plan? Can we get something concrete here?" The young man nearby, growing impatient with their prolonged discussion, interjected.
Faced with his prodding, Hsu Xiaoyue found herself without alternatives. Reluctantly placing her trust in Liu Xu, she bit back her reluctance and conceded, "Fine."
