C13 The Young Nurse Chiang Ling
Modern smartphones come equipped with a cloud feature that allows for the sharing of information across multiple devices using the same account. Yang Yi's phone was logged into her cloud account, enabling data sharing with Ye Yu.
Upon opening his phone and connecting to Wi-Fi, Ye Yu's phone began to automatically sync data from the cloud. To check for any signs of infidelity from his fiancée, he sifted through the messages one by one. Among them, he found a notification from the hospital indicating that Yang Yi's mother, Yang Lanfang, required surgery in a week, with the cost totaling three hundred thousand. Yang Yi was instructed to arrange payment at the hospital.
Ye Yu knew Mrs. Yang quite well, as his initial acquaintance with Yang Yi was through her. Mrs. Yang had been in the hospital for four years, and throughout that time, Yang Yi juggled school and work to just about cover the treatment expenses, leaving her with no savings.
Three hundred thousand was an amount Yang Yi simply couldn't afford, and neither could Ye Yu. However, with his medical expertise, he could circumvent the financial obstacle and directly treat Mrs. Yang's condition. This was the very reason he hadn't accompanied Yang Yi to the Yangquan Wine Cellar.
Resolved, Ye Yu slipped on his sandals and made his way to the hospital. The five hundred yuan Yang Yi had given him the day before had dwindled to a mere one hundred and fifty, and he intended to buy some nutritional supplements for Mrs. Yang. Opting to save money, he chose to walk to the hospital instead of taking a taxi.
Mrs. Yang was staying in bed number six, ward 305, on the third floor of the Central Hospital's inpatient department. The hospital enforced strict visiting hours to ensure a conducive treatment environment for patients. Ye Yu arrived just as visiting hours had ended, and a spirited young nurse was in the process of closing the inpatient department doors.
"Excuse me, nurse," Ye Yu called out, a hint of embarrassment in his voice. "I'm Yang Lanfang's son-in-law from ward 305. I've come to visit her today."
The young nurse paused her task of closing the door and gave Ye Yu a once-over. The name Yang Lanfang was well-known to her; she was the primary nurse responsible for Mrs. Yang's care.
Normally, it was only Yang Lanfang's daughter, Yang Yi, who came to visit her in the hospital. Today, however, the sudden appearance of a son-in-law caught the young nurse off guard and left her somewhat astonished.
"Ah, he looks like he's struggling financially. There's no way he can come up with three hundred thousand yuan. She's so beautiful and devoted. She'd be better off marrying a wealthy heir who could afford her mother's surgery," the nurse thought to herself. She meant no harm; she was quite familiar with the plight of Yang Lanfang and her daughter. After four years in the hospital, their savings had been depleted, and Yang Yi was unable to raise the three hundred thousand yuan needed for her mother's surgery.
"Visiting hours are over. Hand over the items, and I'll deliver them to her shortly," the nurse said sweetly. Despite her sympathy for Yang Lanfang and her daughter, she couldn't break the hospital's strict rules.
"Just let me in for a quick moment; I'll be right out. Please, nurse, can't you bend the rules just this once?"
"I'm sorry, but I can't. These rules are in place for the patients' well-being. You need to leave now before the supervisor sees you and starts scolding," she insisted.
Ye Yu's persistent attempts were futile. The nurse accepted the nutritional supplements he had brought and shut the hospital's main entrance.
He sighed, having hoped to use the visit as an opportunity to check on Mrs. Yang's health. Now, he couldn't even get through the door.
As Ye Yu was lamenting the fruitlessness of his journey, a faint sound of labored breathing came from behind the now-closed door.
It was the young nurse he had just spoken with.
She was in trouble...
