C21 Thank You!
Indeed, Lucian recognized Clem. Whether in his past or present life, Lucian frequently watched his programs and was extremely familiar with his face. Earlier, the entrance was crowded and the lack of streetlights outside meant he hadn't paid much attention.
But upon entering the room, Lucian immediately recognized Clem and realized that these individuals were likely from the Central Television sports channel. Their presence here suggested only one thing: his identity had been compromised.
If Lucian's hunch was right, they were part of the "Total Soccer" program team. It made sense, as Clem was currently the host of the show, which was enjoying a surge in popularity. Lucian never missed an episode.
Despite figuring out their identities and intentions, Lucian's expression remained unchanged as he led them to a room in the backyard.
The group's eyes widened in astonishment as they entered the room, and they couldn't help but let out exclamations of wonder. Lucian had brought them into his personal trophy room.
"You're here for this, aren't you?" Lucian asked, casually sitting on the sofa and rhythmically tapping his finger on his arm.
"Mr. Henson, you've figured it all out?" Elisha inquired tentatively, his voice tinged with respect. Given Lucian's impressive track record, it was no surprise that anyone from the national soccer scene would feel dwarfed in his presence.
"Do I need to guess? I'm not sure about others, but the only reason Teacher Clem would visit my humble abode is this," Lucian replied.
At Lucian's response, everyone turned their gaze to Clem. Despite having interviewed numerous top stars like Messi and Baggio, Clem felt an unfamiliar surge of nervousness.
"In your presence, how could I presume to be called a teacher? You were conquering La Liga and establishing the Tarragona Dynasty when I was still in elementary school," Clem said, managing to keep his poise despite his nerves.
"Don't just stand there, please have a seat. And you, sir," Lucian said, addressing the leader of the group, "how may I address you?"
After inviting everyone to take a seat, Lucian inquired about Elisha.
"Coach Lucian, my name is Elisha, and I'm the current editor-in-chief for the Total Soccer program."
In response to Lucian's question, Elisha answered with respect.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Director Elisha. I really can't accept the title of 'coach.' That's reserved for the head coach of the national team. I'm merely a high school soccer team coach. Please, just call me by my first name."
"You're being too humble. I'm sure the whole nation dreams of having you as the head coach of the national team. And with your track record, you certainly live up to the title of 'coach.' But if you prefer, I'll call you Lucian."
It must be said that anyone in the domestic soccer community would struggle to keep their composure in Lucian's presence. The aura of a top international coach like him was incredibly imposing.
"Lucian, it's been quite some time since anyone has called me that. I understand your intentions, so let's not mince words. We can skip the interview. If you're interested, feel free to take photos and look around the room."
"Do you think the contents of this room could make for a good feature article?"
Upon hearing Lucian's words, Elisha became eager.
"Lucian, I'd like to ask for an opportunity. Our visit isn't just about a simple report; we want to conduct an in-depth interview with you and feature it in the 'Absolute Superstar' segment of Total Soccer."
"'Absolute Superstar'? But that's for interviewing players, and I'm not one. Let's not bother with that. Feel free to take photos in the room. I'll leave you to it. If you need anything, just give me a shout."
Lucian declined their request, not out of any pretense, but because he wasn't ready to step back into the limelight just yet. The system hadn't finished upgrading, and he felt the timing wasn't right to re-enter the public eye.
He planned to make his comeback to the European soccer scene once the system upgrade was complete. That would be the perfect moment to reveal himself to everyone, and he was sure it would take his old adversaries by surprise.
After all, he had once been the nightmare of many in European soccer.
"Lucian, on behalf of the entire football community, I want to express our gratitude for the quiet contributions you've made to our country's football endeavors over the years."
As Lucian walked away, Clem suddenly rose to his feet, calling out loudly. He then bowed deeply. Inspired by his lead, everyone from Central Television, including Elisha, stood and bowed to Lucian in respect.
Moses was the only one left sitting on the sofa, creating an awkward moment.
Hearing the commotion, Lucian paused in his tracks. Truth be told, he was quite baffled. When had he contributed to the national football team?
Despite his inner confusion, Lucian remained outwardly serene.
"Please, there's no need for this. Stand up. I've only done what was expected of me."
"Lucian, we're aware that you're someone who isn't swayed by fame or fortune. In these restless times, it's the presence of veterans like you, who seek no personal gain and tirelessly contribute to our nation's football legacy, that gives us hope."
"Now, I implore you to step into the limelight, to let the world know your story, to show everyone that Chinese football once stood at the pinnacle, twenty years ago, as a symbol of the highest international standard."
"I'm convinced that your emergence will be the much-needed boost for our flagging national football team, reigniting the hope for Chinese football."
Clem's effusive praise was enough to make Lucian's skin crawl. Flattering as it was, he found it almost too much to listen to.
"Look, Clem, I can't speak for the national football team, nor do my achievements represent it. I'll maintain my stance on the interview, but if you're interested, I could share a story. Consider it a way to pass the time. How does that sound?"
