C14 Assassin Attack
After carefully surveying the scene, Lin Yuan noted that there were five assassins blending into the crowd, biding their time to strike. He had assumed Suen Lianhua would be on alert, but to his surprise, she remained oblivious even as she neared the roadside and the killers began to close in on her. One was nearly parked right beside her.
Lin Yuan couldn't tell if Suen Lianhua was baiting them into action or if she truly hadn't noticed the danger. Unwilling to risk Bai Shuang's safety on a guess, he swiftly moved to intervene.
What puzzled him further was that Bai Shuang should have been in the company cafeteria for lunch and rest. What brought her outside? And it looked like she was just about to leave.
Lin Yuan kept his cool, pretending not to notice the assassins.
Bai Shuang had intended to take Suen Lianhua back to the villa for a temporary stay and to pick up some daily necessities. After all, she was her personal bodyguard, hired by her father.
But as Bai Shuang stepped out of the company, she spotted Lin Yuan crossing the street from a coffee shop, where he appeared to have been for quite some time. Yet, it was still working hours.
Lin Yuan approached Bai Shuang with a smile, but she seemed less than pleased to see him.
"Weren't you assigned to the Sales Department? And with our partners arriving this afternoon, shouldn't you be preparing for their reception instead of hanging out at a café? What's the meaning of this?" Bai Shuang confronted him immediately, her tone icy and unforgiving.
"The partners aren't arriving until later this afternoon; there's no rush. Where are you headed? Why didn't you call me? I could have given you a ride," Lin Yuan replied, his voice laced with genuine concern.
With the assassin lurking nearby, Lin Yuan couldn't risk alarming Bai Shuang with the truth, so he opted for a subtler approach.
However, his words only seemed to infuriate Bai Shuang further, her eyes flashing with clear disdain.
"I've already explained how crucial this collaboration is for the company. Yet you still don't seem to take it seriously. Now I see it clearly—you just lack ambition."
Lin Yuan had bigger concerns at the moment. His own ambition, or lack thereof, was irrelevant; his wife's safety was paramount.
"You're heading home, aren't you? Let me drive you."
"No need. Just go back to your coffee."
Without a backward glance, Bai Shuang led Suen Lianhua toward a different vehicle. Yet, as they reached the underground garage, Lin Yuan was still on their heels.
"I've told you, stop following me. Keep this up, and I'll have Suen Lianhua deal with you, and she won't be gentle!"
Suen Lianhua's face hardened as Bai Shuang spoke, and she stepped forward with her fists clenched. It was clear why she was considered an industry elite; her commanding presence would make most people back down. But Lin Yuan was not most people.
Far from intimidated, he seemed even more amused.
"My dad's probably worried about my safety too. I'm supposed to be under your protection. Hitting me would be like hitting your employer. That wouldn't be good, would it?"
Torn, Suen Lianhua gritted her teeth and relaxed her fists. She couldn't fathom how this man had managed to become Bai Shuang's husband.
Suen Lianhua had taken the time to learn about Bai Shuang, a woman so flawless that 'perfect' seemed an understatement. It would take an extraordinarily lucky man to win her hand in marriage, and yet she had ended up with this brazen man. What a waste.
But the truth was as Lin Yuan stated. Bai Shuang's father had indeed mentioned him when she took on the assignment. Although Bai Shuang was her primary responsibility, Lin Yuan was still the employer's son-in-law, and she couldn't lay a hand on him.
The old adage rang true: with a thick enough skin, one is invincible.
Lin Yuan quickly climbed into the car.
The assassins, however, remained still as the vehicle pulled away from the company grounds and onto the road. Lin Yuan was taken aback; he hadn't expected them to be so patient. He had assumed they would make their move in the underground parking lot.
There was a secluded stretch of road between the company and the villa.
"Construction ahead." Several conspicuous signs came into view, and the road was closed off. Suen Lianhua had no choice but to bring the car to a halt.
"Something's off. Stay in the car. I'll check it out. Stay alert."
With a furrowed brow and a stern look, Suen Lianhua instructed them before pushing the door open and stepping out cautiously, muscles tensed for action.
Lin Yuan chuckled to himself. Lianhua hadn't spotted the assassin earlier, but she was far from being off guard.
They could all see quite clearly that there was no sign of construction vehicles or workers on the road ahead.
The sudden appearance of the signs was a clear indication of foul play.
Out of nowhere, two green jeeps burst from the side.
They positioned themselves on either side of Bai Shuang's car, effectively trapping it.
Then, another vehicle appeared from behind, speeding towards them and screeching to a halt with a jarring noise. The three vehicles had Bai Shuang and Lin Yuan completely encircled.
Stepping out of the car, Lianhua sensed trouble and drew a dagger from her waist.
Simultaneously, several men emerged from the vehicles. Dressed in black leather and masked, their eyes betrayed a mix of arrogance and brutality.
"Who are you?"
Gripping her dagger, Lianhua faced the men and spoke calmly.
"Isn't it clear? Step aside. We're only here for Bai Shuang. You're not involved."
The lead masked man sneered menacingly, pulling out his own dagger, seemingly ready to act.
Lin Yuan was momentarily taken aback. Weren't they supposed to be carrying lethal weapons today? Why were these attackers armed with blades?
He then relaxed his right hand, which had been pressed firmly against his waist.
Though he wasn't carrying any firearms, Lin Yuan always wore a belt equipped with razor-sharp throwing blades, their effectiveness at close range comparable to a handgun. He could strike with precision and lethal speed.
In fact, he considered the throwing blades at his waist to be far more practical than a pistol.
If these assailants had drawn guns instead of daggers, Lin Yuan would have struck in a heartbeat, leaving them no chance to survive beyond a second.
In that moment, Lin Yuan felt a chill run up his spine. Whipping around, his eyes sharply focused on the hill behind the car.
"They're quite sly; I nearly missed them."
With a forceful shove, Lin Yuan flung the door open and bolted towards the hill with lightning speed, his silhouette trailing behind him.
He was aware that the thugs near the car were no match for Suen Lianhua. The real threat was perched atop that hill.
His earlier concern was justified; someone was definitely within striking distance.
If he could just hold off the individual on the hill, the others would be inconsequential. Lianhua had the skills to handle these dagger-wielding goons with ease.
As Lin Yuan made his move, a skirmish erupted outside.
"Lin Yuan, call the police, now!"
Bai Shuang snapped to attention, grasping the situation, and frantically dialed as she shouted for Lin Yuan. But as she spun around, she saw the door ajar and Lin Yuan already halfway across the road, dozens of meters away.
"I completely misread you. To think I once believed you had the makings of success!"
He was nothing but a coward! In the face of danger, he left two women behind to save his own skin, an act utterly contemptible.
