C7 Comprehend the Nameless Scroll!
The Yang family had been a prominent fixture in Chiba City for over three centuries. While they hadn't produced any legendary figures, they consistently ranked among the city's most respected clans. Under Yang Zhantian's leadership, his remarkable cultivation skills propelled the Yang family to the status of the city's preeminent family. It was widely believed that no future generation could match his brilliance, especially since Yang Zhantian's sole son was considered a disappointment. However, contrary to expectations, this so-called disappointment possessed nearly unparalleled talent—a secret known only to three people. With careful management, the Yang family's future was poised to shine even brighter.
As Yang Rui and his companions exited the Blade House, they were greeted by a striking woman clad in red. It was none other than Yang Rui's elder sister, Yang Yiyi. Ranking second in cultivation prowess among the Yang family's youth, she was fiercely protective of her brother. Yang Yiyi had a reputation for smoothing over Yang Rui's misadventures, so his fondness for her surged at the sight of her.
"My dear brother has finally seen the light and decided to take up cultivation?" Yang Yiyi exclaimed, wrapping Yang Rui in an enthusiastic embrace. "Have you had an epiphany after all the times I've had to clean up your messes?"
Yang Rui responded with an eye roll. "Which eye of yours witnessed my so-called epiphany?"
"Oh, still playing tough!" Yang Yiyi retorted, pinching Yang Rui's cheek. "You've never once thanked me!"
"We're family; thanks aren't necessary," Yang Rui countered, brushing off Yang Yiyi's hand and stepping ahead. "From now on, I'll be the one protecting you."
Yang Yiyi turned to Yang Zhantian and Sikong Jiao with a playful shrug. "Dad, Mom, this is what happens when you don't discipline him!"
Yang Zhantian chuckled. "Enough now, I get it. But don't underestimate your little brother. There will come a day when he'll surprise you."
"Him? I doubt it. I'll be the one looking out for him. He doesn't have the discipline to cultivate," Yang Yiyi said nonchalantly, though her eyes betrayed a glimmer of joy that she couldn't quite hide.
The group approached the entrance of the library, where a gaunt elder was seated leisurely in the sun. Yang Zhantian greeted him with a respectful bow, "Sixth Uncle, how has your health been lately?"
The elder appeared to be asleep and didn't acknowledge Yang Zhantian, but Yang Zhantian wasn't offended and persisted, "Sixth Uncle, today I've brought Rui here to select a cultivation technique from the library."
The elder cracked open an eye and cast a brief but sharp glance at Yang Rui, "Hmm, you have the time it takes an incense stick to burn to make your selection. Go ahead." With a gesture, the elder sent a subtle wave of energy forth, and a door materialized where there had only been a wall. Guided by Yang Zhantian's nod, Yang Rui stepped through the portal, which vanished behind him. The elder settled back to meditate, and with no further conversation, Yang Zhantian departed with Sikong Jiao and Yang Yiyi in tow.
Inside the library, Yang Rui felt as though he'd entered a typical library, albeit one with a modest collection; only about twenty bookshelves, each brimming with various tomes. He randomly picked up a volume titled 'Records of Strange Things', which chronicled a myriad of oddities. After a cursory glance, he returned it to its place, knowing such books could be perused at any time. With the limited time of an incense stick burning, it seemed wiser to search for a cultivation technique. He scoured the area quickly but found nothing of interest until a staircase in the distance caught his eye.
Tradition suggested that a library like this would have more than one level, with the second floor likely housing basic cultivation techniques and martial arts. Without hesitation, Yang Rui ascended to the second floor and found it as expected: the bookshelves were only a third of those on the first. He pulled out a book titled 'Dragon Movement Art'—a promising find. However, this floor contained only elementary materials. The real treasures were probably on the upper level, but Yang Rui noticed the staircase to the third floor was blocked. It seemed his path had reached an impasse.
Yang Rui had no choice but to look for suitable cultivation techniques on the second floor. What constituted "suitable"? In Yang Rui's mind, it simply meant anything that felt impressive to him. He had completely forgotten the precautions his father, Yang Zhantian, had advised him to take. As the time of a burning incense stick dwindled, Yang Rui had chosen only three books: the Mad Blood Blade Technique, the Nine-circle Ethereal Step, and the Spirit Tempering Spell. These selections, ideal for evasion, combat, and the most fitting for his current stage, the Spirit Tempering Spell, would allow him to breeze through the beginner phase. He could always return later for more advanced techniques.
As Yang Rui was about to depart, something caught his eye. He turned and walked toward the spot he had glimpsed. At the very end of the bookshelf, against the wall, something peeked out. Could this be the protagonist's "golden finger" moment? But did he really need such a thing?
Nevertheless, it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Reaching out, he attempted to move the bookshelf, which was crafted from heavy black ironwood. With considerable effort, he managed to shift it enough to retrieve an exposed scroll of cloth. As he unfurled it, a familiar voice rang out.
"Ding! Congratulations to the host for mastering the Critical Hit! You have fully grasped a section of the Nameless Scroll, earning +50 experience points!"
Following the system's announcement, a flood of insights filled his mind, clarifying his understanding of the technique inscribed on the scroll.
Wow, experience points for this too? Not bad, not bad. It's like hitting the jackpot, a 1% chance and I nailed it on the first try. Truly a stroke of luck! Since I've fully grasped it, I don't need the scroll anymore. I'll leave it for someone else who's destined to find it. With that thought, Yang Rui replaced the scroll and concealed it once again with the bookshelf.
Descending to the entrance, the door materialized before him. Stepping out, he found himself next to the elderly man, to whom he gave a respectful bow. The old man glanced at Yang Rui and said, "These three books can only be borrowed for a month. They must be returned after that time."
"Kid, thanks for the guidance, Senior!" Yang Rui offered another bow. Noticing the elder had once again closed his eyes, he turned and walked away without further conversation.
It wasn't until Yang Rui's silhouette had vanished at the end of the road that the old man whispered to himself, so faintly it was almost inaudible, "It seems the destined one for our ancestor's legacy is not him after all. When will that cultivation technique be discovered, I wonder?"
What would the old man's face look like if he knew Yang Rui had already fully mastered the cultivation technique?
Meanwhile, Yang Rui was feeling fantastic, and not just because he had mastered a new technique, but because the enlightenment had earned him experience points—50 points, to be exact! That was no small amount! At that moment, the Attribute Bar Yang Rui was looking at displayed the following:
