C17 What the Hell Is Called Rules?
Yang Wei and Ye Hua stepped out the door under the approving eyes of the Ye family. At the entrance, Ye Yunyun greeted Yang Wei with a playful wink.
"Brother-in-law, make sure you visit us often! The Ye family always welcomes you!"
Yang Wei responded with a warm smile.
"Of course!"
Beside them, Ye Hua chimed in with a laugh.
"So, you're just welcoming him? What about me?"
Ye Yunyun turned to Ye Hua with a grin.
"Oh, how could I not? I'm always happy when my sister comes home, but next time, make sure to bring your brother-in-law along."
Everyone shared a laugh at this exchange. After saying their goodbyes to the Ye family, Ye Hua and Yang Wei drove back to Lengjiang City.
In the CEO's office, Ye Hua pulled a box out from under the desk and handed it to Yang Wei. He feigned confusion.
"What's this?"
Although Yang Wei had a hunch the box was filled with money, he asked out of courtesy. Ye Hua simply smiled back.
"Why not open it and see for yourself?"
Upon opening the box, Yang Wei found it was indeed stuffed with cash. He had guessed as much when Ye Hua brought out the box, but the sight of so much money still sent a jolt of surprise through him. He had never seen such an amount before. The modest earnings from his monthly takeout deliveries dwindled after rent and utilities, leaving just enough to scrape by and a little to send back home.
"Well then, I shall humbly accept," Yang Wei said with a cheeky grin as he took the money. Only a fool would refuse such an offer. After all the hard work he'd put in, it was only fair to accept some compensation.
Ye Hua watched him with amusement before adding, "There's something else I need to tell you."
To be informed meant the decision was already made, whether one agreed or not.
"What's that?" Yang Wei inquired.
"You won't need to deliver takeout anymore. How about becoming my secretary instead?"
Yang Wei looked puzzled.
"But don't you already have Secretary Su? Why do you need me as your secretary?"
Ye Hua chuckled. "Is there a rule against having two secretaries?"
Yang Wei felt resigned. "Fine, have it your way. It's not like my opinion matters; you just need to notify me."
Ye Hua laughed again, though she didn't argue the point. "Does that mean you accept?"
Yang Wei remained silent, prompting Ye Hua to press on. "As your boss, I should take care of you, right?"
With that, she tossed a set of keys to Yang Wei. "One of them is for a house owned by our company, and there's also a BMW key. You can take the car from the garage later."
Yang Wei didn't decline. Only a fool would pass up on such an opportunity.
Later that day, Ye Hua granted Yang Wei a half-day off. Instead of heading to the new house, he drove the BMW back to his rental. He had just paid this month's rent, and he knew better than to expect the miserly landlord to refund the remaining half. It wasn't that Yang Wei was tightfisted; he simply refused to let the landlord, who always seemed to find a way to increase the rent, benefit from the situation.
Back at the rental, Yang Wei sprawled on the couch with a bowl of instant noodles, to which he added two sausages. "Now that I have money, I shouldn't shortchange myself." Before, he never would have splurged on sausages for his noodles, but now that he was earning good money, he deserved a treat.
Just as he was about to dig in, someone knocked on the door. "Who's there?"
Reluctantly, Yang Wei set aside his noodles and answered the door. It swung open to reveal several imposing men.
"Who are you?" Yang Wei inquired.
"You don't know us, but do you recognize him?" one of the men responded, pulling someone forward.
It was Liu Ba, the man Yang Wei had previously sent packing with a single punch. Now, Liu Ba faced Yang Wei, puffing himself up threateningly.
"Yang Wei, you sly dog! You cozy up to some rich guy and suddenly you can't recognize your old pal? You even gave me a beating. I've been stewing over it, so I brought my boys over to teach you a lesson about respect!"
Yang Wei was resigned but managed to say,
"Come on in, everyone."
He reluctantly invited them inside. If it weren't for the fear of being seen by others, he wouldn't have wanted to invite them in at all.
Liu Ba and the other muscular men huffed as they walked through the door.
Yang Wei peeked outside, ensuring no one was around, before closing the door.
Inside the house, the men filled the sofa completely, leaving no room to spare. With no other option, Yang Wei stood up.
Facing them, he asked,
"So, how do you intend to resolve this issue?"
No sooner had Yang Wei finished speaking than one of them quickly retorted,
"It's simple. You beat up my brother, so naturally, you owe him a hefty sum for medical bills, at least several thousand dollars, right? Otherwise, wouldn't my brother have been beaten for nothing?"
Yang Wei's face soured. He had thought they would come asking for a few hundred dollars at most, which he could easily hand over to get rid of them.
But now they were demanding thousands. Did they really think he was bankrolled by some wealthy woman?
With a grimace, Yang Wei replied,
"No."
At that, another man scoffed,
"No? Fine. Then let us take your BMW parked outside for a spin for a couple of days."
"That's not possible. The car is borrowed from my boss; I can't just lend it out."
A previously silent bald man with a menacing look interjected,
"So, nothing's acceptable? What do you think I am, Wang Laohu?"
Yang Wei was well aware of Wang Laohu, the local top thug who made his living by extorting the townsfolk. There was a time when Yang Wei might have feared him, but not anymore. Now, Wang Laohu was nothing more than a joke in Yang Wei's eyes.
Noticing Yang Wei's indifference, Wang Laohu's anger flared.
"Kid, you've really got some nerve today. If I don't break that arm of yours that's been throwing punches, you'll never learn what it means to follow the rules."
With those words, Wang Laohu angrily overturned the bowl of instant noodles Yang Wei had just prepared and slammed his hand on the table, his face twisted with malice.
Liu Ba and several other muscular toughs rose to their feet, eyeing Yang Wei with the hunger of wolves spotting a lamb.
Yang Wei's heart sank as he looked at his spilled noodles.
He hadn't even had a single bite!
And just like that, they were wasted!
In that moment, Yang Wei faced the group and spoke in a deep tone, "You've made me angry."
At his words, they all burst into raucous laughter.
"Oh, you're angry? What are you going to do, beat us to death?"
"Hahaha, that's hilarious! You think because you're in with some rich folks, you can talk to us like that? Today, we're going to teach you what 'rules' really mean!"
