In 122 BC, Emperor Hanwu sought a route to Sindhu (present-day India) and dispatched an envoy to the Dian Kingdom in what is now Yunnan. During the visit, the King of Dian inquired of the Han envoy, "Who is greater, Han or Dian?" Later, as the envoy traveled through the region of Yelang, the ruler there posed the same question.
