C18 They Convened a Press Conference
"Damn it, what the hell did you feed me!"
After the crowd dispersed, Ho Cheng'an was dry heaving furiously, shooting daggers at Su Wen with his eyes. Su Wen, observing Ho Cheng'an's pathetic state sprawled over a trash can, couldn't help but feel a surge of satisfaction. He reclined on the sofa, legs nonchalantly crossed.
"It's really quite simple," Su Wen mused. "Back when I was in the mountains, out of sheer boredom, I concocted a pill designed to play tricks on people. I've dubbed it the 'Pregnancy Pill.' Whoever takes it, man or woman, will find their belly swelling and suffer from relentless morning sickness."
Ho Cheng'an's world went dark as dizziness overwhelmed him. This was no mere mortal; this was the work of a demon!
"Consider this a minor reprimand. If you stir up trouble again, I won't be so lenient next time!"
With those final words, Su Wen rose from the sofa and strode out of the bar without a backward glance.
"Su Wen! Wait for me!"
As he approached his car, Ann Yiqing rushed up to him. He turned, puzzled.
"What is it?"
Ann Yiqing gave Su Wen a shy glance, her hands nervously twisting her clothes in a manner that screamed of an impending confession.
Oh no! Ann Yiqing couldn't possibly have fallen for me, could she? That's the last thing I need, getting entangled in romantic debts.
A sense of dread washed over Su Wen, but he managed to conceal his concern.
"Um, can we be friends? You really stood up for me back there! I've been wanting to put Ho Cheng'an in his place for ages, but with his connections, I've had to bite my tongue."
Relief washed over Su Wen—it wasn't a confession.
Hearing Ann Yiqing's request, Su Wen exhaled deeply, a polite smile gracing his face. "We can definitely be friends. And there's no need to thank me. I, Su Wen, have always been one to stand up against injustice, especially when it comes to dealing with brainless, conceited types like him."
Brainless, conceited types? Ho Cheng'an was the embodiment of that. Ann Yiqing couldn't help but laugh at his description, a light chuckle escaping her lips.
"Right, if you really can't stand that fool, calling off the engagement is a wise decision. After all, you'll only find true happiness by marrying someone you love, right?"
Su Wen had intended to leave, but recalling what she had mentioned at the bar, he couldn't resist speaking up again.
Ann Yiqing was initially taken aback, but after a few seconds, understanding dawned on her. Her face lit up with a radiant smile as she looked into Su Wen's eyes, which sparkled with realization.
"Got it! I understand now!"
Su Wen paused for a moment, noticing that Ann Yiqing seemed even more beautiful. He then started the car, waved to her, and bid her a simple goodbye.
When he arrived back at the Su family home, it was already past ten at night. Su Tanhua and his son had been keeping to themselves lately, not bothering Su Wen. He glanced at their room, saw no lights on, and figured they hadn't returned yet.
"If you two keep out of trouble, I'll look the other way."
Muttering to himself as if speaking to the air, he dropped this remark and closed his bedroom door.
He slept soundly without dreams, and the next morning, he was awakened by the crisp chirping of birds. Lying on the comfortable bed, he stretched languidly before sitting up.
The Su family's residence was situated in the most prestigious villa area of Shengjing City, right in the city center yet blissfully serene. It was a haven of tranquility, with picturesque landscapes, sweetly scented flowers, and the melodious songs of birds.
Back when he was in the mountains, the old man made him rise at five in the morning to refine pills. At first, he often faced punishment for oversleeping, but over time, he grew accustomed to the routine. Even after returning to Shengjing, his internal clock remained unchanged.
"Young Master, good morning."
The Old Steward was slightly surprised to see him descending the stairs but greeted him respectfully nonetheless. Su Wen nodded in acknowledgment.
"Old Steward, is breakfast ready?"
"Yes, it's been prepared. Would you like to have your meal now, Young Master?"
Unsure of Su Wen's schedule, the Old Steward had taken care not to be remiss, instructing the servants to have breakfast ready and kept warm in the kitchen, just in case he woke up early.
"Okay, bring it up. Are you ready for the press conference? It starts promptly at ten o'clock."
He gracefully ate his breakfast while organizing his affairs.
Despite the Old Steward's reluctance for Su Wen to go public with the cancellation of his engagement, he was, after all, just a servant and had to follow his master's commands.
"Yes, Young Master."
"Also, later on, compile a list of all the notable families in Shengjing, along with their details, and place it in my room."
Reflecting on the unfamiliar faces among the wealthy youths at the Blue Night Bar the night before, Su Wen felt it necessary to review their profiles.
"It's all set. I'll bring it to you shortly."
The Old Steward had anticipated the request for an investigation and had prepared the information in advance. Su Wen had been away from Shengjing for a decade, and the city had changed dramatically in that time.
Su Wen nodded in approval. There was good reason why the Old Steward had remained with the Su family for so many years.
"Ho Cheng'an, son of He Xian. Made his fortune in the stock market before moving into the financial sector and starting a small loan company. A distant relative of Lee Maosen, his business expanded significantly with Lee's backing. Ho Cheng'an proclaims himself Lee Maosen's cousin, often leveraging the Lee family's prestige to throw his weight around in Shengjing."
A cold smile crossed Su Wen's face as he read the information. It seemed he and Lee Maosen were destined to cross paths everywhere he went.
Suddenly, a knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Su Wen closed the document and rose to answer it.
"Young Master, are you ready? The reporters are already assembled in the hall."
The Old Steward stood respectfully at the door, reminding him.
Glancing at his watch, Su Wen saw it was 9:50. He nodded and gestured for the Old Steward to lead the way.
"Isn't Su Tanhua the only Young Master of the Su family? When did another one show up? Could he be Su Mingshan's illegitimate child?"
"Hey, you must be new here, not knowing a thing about the Su family. Su's Group wasn't actually founded by Su Mingshan, but by his brother Su Kaiming. It was only after the family's misfortune ten years ago that Su Mingshan found an opportunity to step in and manage the Su family's affairs."
"What's the story with the Su family's young master?"
"Well, the Su family's young master is none other than Su Kaiming's son! Rumor has it that years ago, a reclusive master saw potential in Su Kaiming's son and decided to take him on as an apprentice. He's been gone for a decade."
Su Wen couldn't help but chuckle as he overheard the reporters' conversations about his past before even entering the hall.
"Young Master, allow me to announce our arrival," said the Old Steward, who had also caught wind of the reporters' chatter and wore an expression of mild embarrassment.
