C1 Activate the System
Ouch!
It hurts so much!
My head is throbbing!
These were the first sensations Ye Fan experienced upon regaining consciousness after a full day and night.
Gradually, he opened his bleary eyes to the sight of a clean and orderly hospital room.
"Thank God, you're finally awake," the nurse said with relief as she checked the readings on the monitors and caught Ye Fan's gaze.
"How long was I out?" Ye Fan managed to ask, fighting through the pounding headache.
"You've been out for a whole day and night. Hang on, I'll go get the doctor," she said, and without waiting for another question, she quickly turned and left the room.
"Dr. Liu, Dr. Liu, the patient in the ICU is awake," the nurse's voice echoed from outside.
Inside the room, Ye Fan closed his eyes, trying to piece together the events that led him here.
Distraught from his girlfriend's breakup proposal, he was aimlessly wandering when he saw a little boy dart into the street. A van was barreling down the road, and in the nick of time, Ye Fan pushed the boy to safety but was struck and sent flying by the van himself.
Looking down at his body, Ye Fan saw it was wrapped in bandages, with several stitched wounds. His body was riddled with injuries, and an IV drip was attached to his arm.
Seeing the extent of his injuries, Ye Fan couldn't suppress a wry smile.
"Gurgle, gurgle!"
His stomach grumbled in protest.
With his free hand, he reached for the milk on the bedside table and gulped it down.
As the milk hit his taste buds, a sweet electronic voice suddenly filled Ye Fan's mind.
"Energy levels meet activation criteria!"
"Ding! Congratulations to the host for successfully activating the All-rounded System!"
Ye Fan's eyes widened in sheer disbelief.
"A system? Are systems like this really possible in our world? Could my misfortune have turned into a stroke of luck, making me the chosen one for this legendary system?"
He had read his fair share of web novels, but he had always dismissed them as pure fiction.
Swallowing hard, the pain in his head now seemed trivial compared to his curiosity. Ye Fan eagerly inquired, "So... System... Why are you called the All-rounded System? What functions do you offer?"
Ye Fan's inquiry went unanswered by the All-rounded System.
"Ding! The All-rounded System is now active. Level: 1. Energy: 10!"
"Detecting extreme weakness in the host, recovery mode has been automatically initiated."
"Ding! The host's condition has been restored. One unit of energy has been deducted. Current energy: 9."
A series of electronic beeps followed.
"Recovery? Energy? Have my injuries really healed?"
Ye Fan checked himself and was relieved to find that all his discomfort had vanished, his wounds had healed without leaving a single scar.
In that moment, Ye Fan was convinced that he had indeed been chosen by the All-rounded System.
"Energy? What's that about? Does my system run on a battery?" Ye Fan wondered.
With a flicker of thought, a semi-transparent screen materialized in his mind.
Host: Ye Fan
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Realm Level: LV0 (Mortal)
System Level: LV1
System Energy: 9 (Energy can be increased or replenished by completing system missions or upgrading the system level)
The system will cease assistance when the energy level reaches 0.
Ye Fan slowly realized that healing his injuries had cost him one unit of energy.
But it seemed his system was incredibly powerful, and he sensed there were many more features for him to discover...
"Sir?"
While Ye Fan was engrossed in his thoughts, his attending physician, Dr. Liu, entered the room. He called out several times, but Ye Fan did not react, prompting Dr. Liu to furrow his brow in concern. Ye Fan's condition was serious; he was lucky to be alive since his injuries had miraculously missed his vital organs.
Now that the wounds were treated and he was conscious, his unresponsiveness was troubling. The hospital had made it clear: they were to ensure his full recovery.
"Have we been unable to reach his family?" Dr. Liu asked with a frown. Although Ye Fan's hospital bills had been settled, he was eager to contact the patient's family to inquire about any past medical issues and why Ye Fan seemed unresponsive upon awakening.
"His phone is damaged, and we can't find his SIM card. No one in the vicinity recognizes him," the nurse replied, shaking her head.
"Keep an eye on him. I need to call the dean," Dr. Liu instructed before stepping out of the room.
He needed to update the dean on the situation. The little boy Ye Fan had rescued was no ordinary child; he was the brother of Blaland's most renowned businesswoman, Su Yurou.
In the hospital room, the nurse watched Ye Fan intently. Seeing him standing there, lost in thought and silent, she found it quite odd.
"What happened to him all of a sudden?"
Just then, Ye Fan snapped out of his reverie, eager to get home and make sense of the All-rounded System. His wounds were healed, and he had no desire to spend another minute in the hospital.
So, Ye Fan sat up and yanked out the IV.
"What are you doing? Get back in bed, now!"
The nurse was alarmed by Ye Fan's actions. She rushed to his side, half-convinced the patient had lost his mind.
"I'm fine now. I need to be discharged. I can't afford the hospital bills." Ye Fan had been raised in an orphanage and lived frugally. True to his name, he had led a very ordinary life, and his earnings came from odd jobs.
"Your hospital fees have been covered by someone else. Get back to bed. You're still healing from your injuries; it'll take months to fully recover," the nurse insisted dutifully.
"No, I can't wait that long. I'm telling you, I'm alright. I need to be discharged now," Ye Fan said with resolve, stepping off the bed.
"You really can't be discharged yet!" The nurse stood her ground, signaling her firm stance.
"What's the problem here?" Dr. Liu entered just after finishing a phone call and immediately noticed Ye Fan getting out of bed.
"Who allowed you to get up? Get back in bed; you need more rest!"
"Doctor, I'm okay now. I need to be discharged," Ye Fan stated with conviction.
"That's not possible. Your wounds haven't fully healed. You can't be discharged!" Dr. Liu could not possibly agree to Ye Fan's discharge. The dean had given explicit orders to ensure Ye Fan's recovery. If Ye Fan left now, Dr. Liu had no idea how he would explain it to the dean.
"I must be discharged. I know my own body, and I'm truly fine. A few days of rest at home will do," Ye Fan argued as he made his way slowly toward the door.
If it weren't for the fear of causing a sensation, Ye Fan would have already unraveled the bandages enveloping him to reveal what lay beneath.
Witnessing Ye Fan's resolute stance, Dr. Liu found himself at a loss for what to do. This was, after all, a hospital, where it was out of the question to forcibly prevent a patient from being discharged.
Just then, the door to the ward swung open once more, and a young woman entered.
Perfect!
That was Ye Fan's immediate reaction upon laying eyes on her. Her figure was statuesque and alluring, her features so finely chiseled they seemed the work of a master sculptor, and with minimal makeup, her natural beauty was effortlessly accentuated.
Ye Fan had encountered numerous beauties in his life, including stars gracing the television screen, yet in comparison to the woman before him, they all paled.
It wasn't just Ye Fan who was captivated; Dr. Liu, standing nearby, was equally spellbound.
But Dr. Liu quickly composed himself, bowing his head, too intimidated to meet the gaze of the woman before him. "Miss Su, you've arrived."
It turned out she was none other than Su Yurou, the foremost powerhouse and unparalleled beauty of Blaland.
