C1 Inheriting Hundreds of Millions

In a fancy restaurant downtown.

"Anson Edwards, stop slacking off! Why aren’t you working? We’re not paying you to just stand there!”

The young man being scolded immediately picked up a broom and ran over.

“Clean up all these rooms! Until every room is as clean as new, don’t think of leaving!”

Jesus! That’s seven rooms! Cleaning it all requires at least two hours! But his shift ends in half an hour.

The manager saw Anson’s reluctance. “What’s the deal now? You don’t want to do the job? Then get your ass out!”

“Please don’t fire me. I really need this job!” Anson was waiting to get paid to buy his girlfriend, Margaret Burton, a new mobile phone.

The manager cast Anson a disdainful look and left.

Anson rolled up his sleeves and began to clean up in earnest. When he was cleaning the fifth room, the mess in there shocked him. What he read from the news wasn't an exaggeration. Those who dine at the restaurant really could make the place a garbage dump after they finish eating.

“Jesus Christ! Were they eating or having a food fight?” Anson held back nausea while he was cleaning up the leftovers on the table.

“What’s that?” Anson reached for something tucked in the sofa.

It was a new iPhone! Anson held the phone in his hand and admired it carefully. Margaret had been hinting at him many times that she wanted a new iPhone. And Anson promised that he would send her one.

But it had already been a few weeks and he hadn’t earned enough money. The money he got from picking up trash was not as much as before. He could only barely support himself. For that, Margaret had been giving him the silent treatment for days! This was why Anson was working several part-time jobs.

But things weren’t going as well as he thought. Even though he was working day and night, he was still a few hundred dollars short.

Looking at the iPhone he picked up, Anson was wild with joy. It’s a gift from heaven! Anson could already picture how happy Margaret would be when he gave her the phone. She would definitely hug him tightly and even kissed him!

“Stop! Stop! What was I thinking? The phone was accidentally left behind by a guest. As an upright citizen, I should return it to its original owner. Whoever lost the phone must be very anxious.”

In the end, rationality overcame greed.

Anson cleaned up the room and took the phone to the front desk.

“You thief! That’s my phone!” A woman’s piercing scream sounded in the hall.

Anson looked in the direction of the shout and found it was Athena Lawrence. He walked up to Athena and handed the phone to her.

“Is this your phone? I found it on the sofa.”

“I won’t buy your lie! It was you who stole my phone!”

Athena snatched the phone from him and wiped it with a tissue paper in disgust.

The commotion here alarmed the manager. "What's going on?"

“One of your employees stole my phone!” said Athena fiercely and pointed at Anson.

Anson panicked. How could she malign him so easily?

“I didn't steal her phone! I picked it up in room 5!”

“Drop the act! Every student from Natler University knows how poor you are. But I didn’t expect you to steal things!”

“You have no proof that I stole your phone!” Anson looked at Athena angrily. She was going too far!

As the manager listened, a trace of evil look flashed into his eyes.

“I will not tolerate such disgraceful acts of theft from my staff. You’re fired, Anson. Get the fuck out of my restaurant.”

“You gotta believe me! Please! Please!”

Anson anxiously tried to explain, but the manager refused to listen at all.

A few security guards came over and grabbed Anson.

The last scene Anson saw before he was thrown out was the gloating smile on Athena’s face.

Anson wanted to go in back to at least claim his salaries for the last few days but the tall and ferocious security guards standing at the door made him give up the idea.

Ever since Anson reached adulthood, he was cut off from the family to live independently. In order to make a living, he had no choice but to pick up trash. This kind of poor life let him know the fickleness of human nature.

Is there an end to this pathetic life? Anson sighed bitterly.

Just as Anson returned to the dormitory, Iker Reed told him Margaret wanted to meet him at the playground.

“When does Meg want to meet?” asked Anson excitedly.

“8 p.m.” Iker patted Anson’s shoulder, “Go get her, my man.”

“Does that mean somebody is gonna get lucky tonight?” teased Otto.

“I betcha he would.” chipped in Wesley Lawrence.

Wesley looked even more excited than Anson.

“Stop making fun of me! You guys are overthinking!”

After leaving the dormitory, Anson gave out a wry smile. The only part of Margaret he was allowed to touch now was just her hands. They had not even kissed each other yet!

When Anson got to the playground, Margaret was there already.

“I’m so sorry for being late. Please don’t be angry at me. That new iPhone you want, I almost save up enough money to buy it.”

“You have promised me a new phone for months! You’re nothing but a big liar!”

When he mentioned the phone thing, Margaret was pissed. For a stupid phone, she let this poor bastard be her boyfriend for months now, yet there was no sign of the phone!

Anson wanted to hold Margaret’s hand.

“I’m trying my best to save money. Just give me some more time, Meg.”

“No point! We are done.”

“Meg, please, I...”

Margaret became increasingly disgusted with the man in front of her. He still hadn't realized that he was being played and was acting like a fool, which made her feel nauseous.

“Why? Why would you want to break up with me?”

Anson felt Margaret's coldness and ruthlessness.

"Did I do something wrong? Tell me, I'll change! I will change right now!"

Anson tried to grab Margaret's hand in fear, but Margaret mercilessly shook him off.

“I heard what you did! You are a thief! Everybody on the campus knows about you stealing a phone! It’s so shameful! How could you do things like that?”

Margaret's words were like a bolt from the blue, striking Anson.

“I can explain! It's not what you think!”

“The truth is I dumped you because I already have a new boyfriend. He is a real rich unlike you! If you still have a shred of conscience, you’ll let me go!”

“But, if you dump me because I’m poor, then why did you choose to be with me in the first place?”

“Did you really want to know?” Margaret sneered. “Because it was fun playing with you, watching you following me behind like a good puppy.”

Margaret's words were like a sharp blade, stabbing at Anson's heart. He was in so much pain that he could not breathe.

“Go, Margaret. I won’t pester you anymore.”

However, just as Margaret turned away, Anson received a text message.

'Dear Mr. Edwards, congratulations on obtaining the right to inherit billions of assets in the family. A senior butler will be of your service.'
