C11 Only Know How to Eat!
"Erdan's grandma, this meal is so delicious, there's not a scrap left."
"Exactly, stop wandering around and get back to eating before it's all gone."
Upon hearing the chatter, Erdan's grandma slapped her thigh and rushed back, but it was too late.
The table was completely cleared, not a morsel in sight, and the plates were scraped clean of oil!
"What happened? Who messed with the food in my bowl?"
Erdan's grandma was stunned. It was one thing for the table to be empty, but her bowl had been full of food, and now more than half the rice was gone!
The meal had been exceptionally tasty, a rare treat for Erdan's grandma, and now, after just a taste, it had vanished?
"Erdan's grandma, we only ate from the table. Your grandson helped himself to your bowl. After you left, he couldn't reach the dishes, so he took from yours."
"Right, and he was crying for Blueberry Chinese Yam. We were worried he'd eat too much and have trouble digesting, but he said you're old and can't eat much, so to avoid wasting food, he finished your half bowl of rice too."
"Burp, Grandma, I don't want Blueberry Chinese Yam anymore, I'm stuffed, hehe."
Erdan grinned at his grandma, "Grandma, the food's so good. I'm coming back tomorrow, so make sure you wake me up."
"All you think about is eating!"
"Damn it, I haven't even had a bite yet, and you've gone and eaten my share too, you little rascal!"
The more delighted Erdan was, the more irate his grandma got, grabbing him and giving him a spanking.
"Ow, ow..."
Erdan howled as he was spanked, while his playmates snickered endlessly.
Faang Hua, hearing the ruckus, thought Erdan's antics were hilariously naughty.
Erdan wasn't stupid; after a couple of smacks and the laughter of onlookers, he scampered off, clutching his backside, with his grandma hot on his heels.
"You little scamp, stop running! If I don't tan your hide today, I'll take your last name!"
"You're Erdan's grandma; it doesn't quite fit for you to take on your grandson's surname, does it?"
The room erupted in laughter at the playful banter between grandma and grandson.
"Hua's cooking is really something else. It's a shame we might not get to enjoy it in the future."
"Seems that way. He's a college student now. Those students are all aiming for office jobs. Just the thought of missing out on that delicious fried pork belly makes me upset."
"Better savor it while we can, then."
The conversation was tinged with a sense of loss.
Mrs. Taohua shared in the sentiment, her concern growing as she observed Tian Tian and Faang Hua's lackluster interaction.
"Don't worry, folks. In today's world, you never know where the future might take us," Faang Hua said, lightening the mood.
The crowd chuckled, taking his words in stride.
Once the meal was over, people busied themselves with various tasks. The elders convened for games of cards and mahjong, while those tidying up grabbed plastic bags. A few local dogs huddled under the tables, happily gnawing on bones, tails wagging.
"Uncle, I've wrapped up everything here, so I'll head back now. I'll come by early tomorrow."
"Today, you've really outdone yourself, Hua. Not a soul could fault your cooking. Thanks to you, the Xu family, and I, Xu Jialong, have made quite the impression in the village!" Xu Jialong said, clapping Faang Hua on the back with a booming laugh.
He then fished out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and pressed it into Faang Hua's hands. "Here, keep this."
"Uncle, I—"
"Don't turn it down. I know you don't smoke, but your dad does, right? Consider it a gift for him. And after the banquet, I'll make sure to give you a little something extra."
With Xu Jialong insisting, Faang Hua had no choice but to gratefully accept the gesture.
