C5 You Can't Do It
Upon witnessing the scene, both Luo Yiran and the onlookers gasped in shock.
They weren't alone; even Chair Yang was at a loss to identify the problem.
Panic washed over his face, sweat beading on his forehead, as he fixated on the face of Luo Yiran's mother.
Blood was pouring from her mouth, as if she were on the brink of death.
"Chair Yang, please, you must save my mother!"
Chair Yang, with a furrowed brow, continued to take Luo Yiran's mother's pulse. "This isn't right. Her physical state shouldn't warrant this. Why is she coughing up blood?"
Feeling helpless, Chair Yang addressed the crowd, "We need to get her to the ICU immediately. I've never encountered such symptoms in my entire career."
But just as the crowd began to close in, Jiang Chen interjected, "I said he was incompetent, and you wouldn't believe me."
Clearly, Jiang Chen's remark was aimed at Luo Yiran.
But Luo Yiran was too distraught to engage in a verbal spar; she had nearly cried herself dry that day.
"All you do is make snide comments. Step aside and don't interfere with her care."
Chair Yang bristled at hearing Jiang Chen's continued criticisms.
He had already taken Luo Yiran's mother's pulse and thought that a little delay for acupuncture would be harmless.
But now, it was clear that her condition had far exceeded his initial assessment.
In that moment, Jiang Chen once again supported Luo Yiran's mother.
He seemed indifferent to the blood spilling from her mouth.
Onlookers cried out in alarm, "What are you doing? Stop right now!"
"Do you want to kill her?"
Jiang Chen, however, paid them no mind, not even acknowledging their concerns.
He gently infused a strand of Spiritual Qi into the back of Luo Yiran's mother, using it to ensnare the accumulating black mist.
With his intervention, her condition visibly improved, and her complexion grew noticeably healthier.
As everyone witnessed the transformation, their attention shifted from Chair Yang to Jiang Chen, murmuring in amazement.
Even Luo Yiran's face registered astonishment at the turn of events.
Is this the same hopeless case she once knew? Somehow, she found him increasingly inscrutable.
At the First People's Hospital, her mother's condition had stumped every doctor, including Chair Yang, an expert in challenging cases, who was on the verge of transferring her to the ICU.
Yet, under Jiang Chen's care, her mother appeared untroubled.
Despite the gravity of her earlier words, Luo Yiran was at a loss for words of gratitude.
A tangible tension and embarrassment hung between them, but then Jiang Chen broke the silence, "I need a dose of ginseng and angelica."
His command left everyone momentarily frozen.
With no one moving, he scanned the room, "Are you just going to stand there? Do you want to watch a patient die in your hospital?"
Prompted by Jiang Chen's stern tone, someone finally responded and dashed off to the pharmacy.
Jiang Chen intensified the flow of spiritual energy.
Miraculously, Luo Yiran's mother's eyes fluttered open, just a sliver.
Unexpectedly, her first words were a plea, "Yiran, you absolutely cannot marry that good-for-nothing. You're being rash and jeopardizing your future."
Unaware of Jiang Chen's presence, her first sight was her daughter, tears brimming in her eyes, prompting her heartfelt admonition.
Luo Yiran cast an awkward glance at Jiang Chen, unsure how to navigate the discomfort.
Jiang Chen, however, remained silent, seemingly oblivious to the comment.
Luo Yiran assumed he was just as he had always been—unresponsive to criticism.
Finally, the nurse arrived with the medicine.
Though neither herb was particularly rare, Jiang Chen took them and pressed them to the small of Luo Yiran's mother's back.
Without dispelling the dark energy, her mother's recovery was impossible.
Logically, she was beyond saving, particularly after coughing up blood, which had left her severely depleted.
Jiang Chen channeled his spiritual energy, infusing the healing essence into Luo Yiran's mother's body before gradually withdrawing his own energy.
"I've saved her life; what happens next is out of my hands."
With those words, Jiang Chen had a nurse assist Luo Yiran's mother to her feet.
He then readied himself to depart.
Witnessing Jiang Chen's actions, and seeing her mother's improved condition, Luo Yiran leaned in and whispered to her mother, "Mom, Jiang Chen is the one who saved your life just now."
Jiang Chen didn't linger. Bathed in the admiring looks of the nurses and doctors, he promptly exited the ward.
Luo Yiran instructed her father to care for her mother, then hurried after Jiang Chen.
To her surprise, she only managed to catch up with him at the hospital's entrance.
"Jiang Chen, where are you headed?"
"Are you leaving just because my mom said a few things to you?"
Luo Yiran's issue was resolved, and her demeanor reverted to its usual state, no longer taking Jiang Chen's feelings into account.
"I've told you clearly before, I'd help you this one time. After that, we're even and there's no further connection between us," Jiang Chen responded coolly, turning back to face her.
Luo Yiran was thunderstruck; she never expected Jiang Chen to speak to her in such a way.
She had assumed everything was perfectly resolved and that Jiang Chen would continue to be as he was before.
And after Jiang Chen had stood up for her, she didn't see him as the same vulnerable person he once was.
"What are you saying?"
Luo Yiran stood still, bewildered, confronting Jiang Chen.
"I mean exactly what I said."
With that, Jiang Chen stopped engaging with Luo Yiran and walked away.
Left behind, Luo Yiran stood frozen for a moment before finally calling out loudly, "Jiang Chen, by what right do you scorn me?"
"How do you measure up to me that you would even think of leaving me?"
"I'm telling you, you can't just walk away from me. You owe me for the rest of your life."
Jiang Chen simply shook his head and continued on, paying no mind to Luo Yiran's outburst behind him.
He made his way toward the old house that had belonged to Jiang Chen in a past life.
