C16 Beginner Soul Body
Wang Anshi glanced at Chen Yangguang with a hint of panic, and the latter could only offer a helpless shrug in response.
When a mental patient spirals out of control, force is not a viable option for restraint; it often has the opposite effect. The only solution is to gradually calm their emotions.
As the group looked on, startled by his antics, Ye Cheng suddenly burst into uproarious laughter. "Hahaha, didn't I tell you? With my acting skills, I could easily win awards. Gotcha, didn't I?"
Ye Cheng's unexpected laughter snapped Wang Anshi out of his daze. "You were acting?"
"Absolutely. So, what do you think? Pretty convincing, right?" Ye Cheng boasted with a smug grin.
Frankly, Wang Anshi was at a loss for words and was even tempted to throw a punch Ye Cheng's way.
"I'm not insane. Why would you take me to the hospital? I'm a T300 member dispatched by the headquarters. T100, is there a mission they need me to handle?"
"Yes, yes, T300, please follow me."
Thankfully, Ye Cheng, though a bit eccentric, was reasonable and could be reasoned with.
As the night deepened, a Supernatural Bureau police car followed by a mental hospital ambulance drove through the darkness, eventually coming to a halt in the desolate western outskirts.
In the solitude of the western outskirts, Ye Cheng sat contentedly in the back of the police car, munching away at a heap of snacks.
The Supernatural Bureau agents exited the vehicle first, each holding a device to measure Yin Qi in one hand and a protective talisman drawn by Ye Cheng in the other. Oddly enough, the devices showed no readings, yet a chilly breeze persisted.
Munching on chicken feet, Ye Cheng stepped out of the car, the cool breeze a welcome relief on his face.
Wang Anshi stood anxiously by Ye Cheng's side and whispered, "Do you sense anything?"
"Sure do," Ye Cheng replied earnestly, nodding. "These chicken feet are delicious."
Warning! A Soul Body is drawing nearer.
Before Wang Anshi could utter another word, Ye Cheng raised his hand, signaling for silence. He tossed the half-eaten chicken feet to the ground and stared intently at the nearby woods, on high alert.
Everyone tensed up at Ye Cheng's cautious demeanor.
All eyes were fixed as a figure emerged from the forest, drifting aimlessly across the wilderness, utterly oblivious to its final destination.
Wang Anshi swallowed hard and glanced at Ye Cheng.
System Notification: Beginner Soul Body detected. It possesses no offensive capabilities and can be expelled.
"Beginner Soul Body?" Ye Cheng asked with a furrowed brow. "Who is this person?"
Wang Anshi signaled to the nearby officer with a look. The officer scanned the Soul Body with his device, promptly displaying its information.
"Jiang Zicheng, male, aged 35. He's the man who died in the wilderness on the outskirts of town yesterday."
A Beginner Soul Body was hardly on par with a wild ghost, let alone a lone one. No wonder it lacked any aggression.
"Why is it a Beginner Soul Body?" Wang Anshi wondered aloud. "Normally, those who die with deep grievances become resentful ghosts, or at least a lone or wild ghost. They shouldn't end up as a Beginner Soul Body."
Ye Cheng scoffed, "If the resentment has been absorbed, of course it's gone. I can see that much, but you can't. Makes me wonder who's really the sick one here."
Being insulted by a madman was one thing, but being unable to respond was utterly frustrating.
Still, only a ghost of considerable strength, like a fierce ghost or stronger, could absorb the resentment from a Soul Body. That was a perilous thought indeed!
"Let's check it out."
At Wang Anshi's order, several officers cautiously moved toward Jiang Zicheng. Just then, a strong wind blew, and a woman emerged from the woods in a frantic dash.
The officer's alertness waned as he approached her. "Miss, are you okay? Have you encountered some trouble?"
The woman looked up, her eyes brimming with tears. "Someone's chasing me. It's terrifying. I'm so afraid."
It was rare for a man not to be swayed by such a beautiful woman seeking comfort. The officer gently patted her back and whispered reassuringly, "Don't worry, I'll take you to safety."
Suddenly, the woman bowed her head, her eyes glinting with a murderous intent. Her right hand, nails elongating several feet, lunged toward the unsuspecting officer's head.
At that moment, the protective talisman the police officer was carrying burst into a brilliant golden light, prying open the woman's hand. She shoved the officer away, staring in disbelief at the blue flames dancing on her skin.
"Hellfire? What are you?"
The officer had no clue about the Hellfire the woman mentioned. He was petrified by the unfolding events. By the time he came to his senses, he frantically searched his pockets for the talisman Ye Cheng had given him, only to find it had vanished.
Concerned for his safety, the officer dashed to Ye Cheng's side as if it were the only place he could find refuge.
The Purple Fox, a millennial Demonic Fox ensnared by love, was determined to exterminate any man who harbored lustful thoughts. A high-level threat, she was exceedingly dangerous.
"Purple Fox? What's that? Are fox spirits still a thing?" Ye Cheng asked, bewildered by the stunning woman nearby.
In an instant, the Purple Fox transformed, now clad in a purple gown reminiscent of ancient attire. She flicked her sleeve with a scoff and said, "I never thought I'd encounter an old acquaintance. Jiang Zilang, it's been ages."
"Jiang Zilang? Who's Jiang Zilang?" Ye Cheng called out, scanning the area. "Jiang Zilang, where are you? Show yourself, someone's looking for you! Wait, a fox is looking for you!"
Wang Anshi was at a loss for words. It was clear to anyone paying attention that Purple Fox was addressing Ye Cheng when she spoke of Jiang Zilang.
"She's talking to you," Wang Anshi murmured to him.
"Me?" Ye Cheng pointed to himself, noticing everyone's eyes on him, unaware of when he'd acquired this new name.
Stepping forward, Ye Cheng raised his voice, "You've mistaken me for someone else. My name is Ye Cheng, not Jiang Zilang."
"Centuries have passed, yet you remain as elusive as ever," Purple Fox said with a light laugh. In a swift motion, she was suddenly standing before Ye Cheng. "It's been years since we last met. Have you thought of me? Because I've been thinking of you, day and night."
The Purple Fox before them was already considered a high-grade Demonic Fox, and this one boasted a millennium of cultivation. Wang Anshi and his companions couldn't help but swallow nervously. As the Purple Fox drew nearer, they instinctively retreated several steps.
While Ye Cheng's presence had previously offered a semblance of safety, the situation had drastically changed, with the sense of danger escalating rapidly.
The Purple Fox's pale, delicate hand rested on Ye Cheng's shoulder, her fingers grazing his cheek with a feathery touch. "Jiang Zilang, how do you intend to make amends for all these years?" she asked.
"Make amends? What kind of amends?" Ye Cheng was perplexed, yet he couldn't shake the feeling that he knew the Purple Fox from somewhere. "Have we met before?"
