C14 You Are too Overbearing!!
Tan Lili's cheeks were flushed, and she couldn't contain herself.
Thankfully, Old Zuo had expedited the paperwork, or she would have wished the ground would swallow her up.
"You're free to go."
When Old Zuo entered the room, he was carrying a bag. It held the "tools" that had been confiscated from Chu Yun upon his arrival.
Chu Yun wasn't surprised in the slightest.
He rose to his feet and shook hands with Old Zuo, smiling as he said, "Sorry for the inconvenience."
Old Zuo was at a loss for words, torn between laughter and tears.
"If you don't want to be a bother, then try to show some restraint," Tan Lili said, clearly irritated. "We live in a society governed by laws. Even with privileges, you can't just do as you please."
Chu Yun glanced at Tan Lili and calmly responded, "I'm simply doing what a man ought to do, nothing more."
Not wishing to bicker with Tan Lili, Chu Yun accepted the bag from Old Zuo and quipped, "You should find Officer Tan a partner. She's got too much energy to spare, even bothering a married man like myself."
"You're spouting nonsense!" Tan Lili's face turned scarlet, and she clenched her teeth. "Who do you think you are? Why would I be interested in you?"
"See, you're furious because I hit a nerve," Chu Yun remarked, exiting the interrogation room with the bag in hand.
The two officers were left exchanging bewildered looks.
...
Su Xiaoxiao was wrestling with mixed feelings.
After being brought to the police station, she underwent a thorough interrogation. She answered every question truthfully and without bias, not concealing anything despite Chu Yun being her brother-in-law.
Lie? Provide false testimony?
Her ethics and upbringing wouldn't allow it.
Once her statement was recorded, she was escorted to the rest area, where, by chance, her classmate Lin Shuang was also present.
Feeling remorseful that her brother-in-law had struck Lin Shuang's uncle, she greeted her upon entering. Lin Shuang, however, just huffed coldly and ignored her, leaving Su Xiaoxiao no choice but to sit quietly in a corner.
Later, the officers brought in tea, one cup for each person.
Then, Su Xiaoxiao's space was filled with an array of fruits and beverages. The officers coming and going were exceptionally kind and considerate, as if she were the victim.
Lin Shuang was extremely dissatisfied with the stark disparity in treatment and was filled with doubts.
Her frustration peaked when Chu Yun walked into the resting room without a scratch, setting Lin Shuang off. Su Xiaoxiao, on the other hand, was equally stunned.
He was unscathed after such a beating? And he was released before her, even though she had cooperated with the investigation?
"Xiaoxiao, let's go," Chu Yun approached, speaking in a gentle whisper.
Su Xiaoxiao stood frozen, unable to grasp the situation.
"How did you conduct this investigation!? My uncle was beaten for no reason?" Lin Shuang erupted in anger, confronting Old Zuo and the others who trailed behind Chu Yun.
Old Zuo exchanged a knowing glance with Tan Lili, who reluctantly escorted Lin Shuang away.
"Mr. Chu, you're free to leave now," Old Zuo said, closing the door with a polite gesture.
Chu Yun was fine, but Old Zuo was left to deal with the aftermath.
In the now-empty lounge, Chu Yun noticed Su Xiaoxiao's hesitation and considerately poured her a cup of hot tea. "Did they give you a hard time?" he inquired.
"If I say they did, what? Are you going to start a fight here too?" Su Xiaoxiao fixed her gaze on Chu Yun, leaning back slightly to maintain her distance from this man with a propensity for violence.
In just half a year, how had he transformed from a timid nobody into a bloodthirsty monster?
Chu Yun responded to his sister-in-law's sharp questioning with an easy smile, setting the hot tea down in front of him. "I would," he affirmed with a nod.
Su Xiaoxiao's body shook as she exclaimed, "You're truly insane!"
"I've been holding back," Chu Yun said, lighting a cigarette and settling into the seat across from her. His casual gaze now held a dark, intense glimmer, like an abyssal galaxy.
Su Xiaoxiao bit her lip, boldly scrutinizing Chu Yun's unremarkable face for the first time. She was desperate to understand what had happened to her once feeble brother-in-law to cause such a drastic and frightening change in him.
And the police couldn't touch him!
Su Xiaoxiao wasn't naive. She knew Lin Shuang's uncle harbored feelings for her. Yet, he hadn't acted on them, and he had always been polite. Couldn't Chu Yun have simply warned him verbally instead of resorting to such extreme measures?
"Can you explain why you did this?" Su Xiaoxiao asked, her body quivering as she fixed her gaze on Chu Yun.
"He harbors ill will towards you," Chu Yun replied, taking a drag of his cigarette.
"But he hasn't done anything!" Su Xiaoxiao's voice escalated.
"Not even in his thoughts," said Chu Yun, his face the picture of serenity.
"You're being too domineering!" Su Xiaoxiao was livid with rage.
Yet, inexplicably, there was a part of her heart, always so fragile and sensitive, that felt strangely fulfilled.
"You're the first of the Sus to compliment me," Chu Yun said with a smile.
Su Xiaoxiao was nearly apoplectic with fury.
He remained shameless, but unlike before when he was meek and ineffective, he had transformed into a beast.
"It's late, and you have class tomorrow," Chu Yun said as he rose to his feet. "Your brother-in-law will take you back to school."
Su Xiaoxiao agreed to his suggestion but kept her distance from Chu Yun, even more so than when she despised him.
Chu Yun just smiled, unfazed.
They came from different worlds, with distinct ways of assessing and handling danger.
Chu Yun possessed an exceptional ability to act and an unbreakable will—pillars that had once helped him forge his legendary status.
Before they knew it, they had reached the school gates.
Su Xiaoxiao halted and turned to him, "If you're really capable, help alleviate my sister's work troubles."
"I've already told you, your sister hasn't broken her contract," Chu Yun responded.
"What about my aunt—"
"Would you rather believe Chen Xiuling, who's all talk, than me, who is decisive?" Chu Yun asked sternly, imparting his wisdom. "Xiaoxiao, you can't just believe everything you hear. You need to learn to discern and recognize the true nature of people. Think about it—does Chen Xiuling have a closer relationship with you than I do? Her son is merely your cousin, while your sister's son and I are your direct nephew. You should be calling me 'aunt.'"
Su Xiaoxiao's head spun with confusion. "So, my sister really didn't lose her job?"
"What would I gain from lying to you?" Chu Yun declared emphatically. "If your sister were out of a job, I'd be the one left out in the cold!"
"Shameless!"
Su Xiaoxiao was devastated. What had the Su family done to deserve such a son-in-law?
After escorting Su Xiaoxiao back to school, Chu Yun hailed a cab and headed home.
He had spent the entire night at the police station, which coincidentally aligned with his late return from a night of heavy drinking with friends.
But upon entering his home, he was startled by several suitcases in the living room.
He hadn't brought much luggage with him to Pearl, so there was no immediate threat of Su Mingyue throwing him out. But what was the deal with those suitcases?
Su Mingyue was seated in the living room, watching TV in her plain, homely attire. Conservative and stiff, she wore long sleeves and pants despite the summer heat, clearly on guard.
"What's all this about?" Chu Yun asked, slipping off his shoes and looking around curiously.
"Selling the house to settle debts," Su Mingyue replied without taking her eyes off the television. The glow from the LCD screen cast an enchanting light on her face.
Chu Yun silently wondered: Hadn't Xue Chaoqing called to inform us yet?
"Do we really need to sell the house just to pay off debts?" Chu Yun's anxiety spiked. "If you sell the house, where am I supposed to live?"
Confronted with Chu Yun's blatantly self-centered concern, Su Mingyue remained composed: "As long as I have a roof over my head, you won't be left homeless."
