C5 I will Take Responsibility!
Dung Yuhua nearly passed out.
After the business went under, Su Mingyue became her last hope for a turnaround. However, she hadn't anticipated that her daughter would cross the formidable Han family, leaving herself in jeopardy.
The Su family was in disarray.
Dung Yuhua and Chen Xiuling rushed into the kitchen to confront her.
They were convinced that Su Mingyue wasn't responsible for Han Jin's admission to the ICU. If only Su Mingyue could reveal the real perpetrator, there might still be a sliver of hope.
Su Zhennan, who had remained silent, glanced at the composed Chu Yun and said, "Let's talk."
On the balcony, Su Zhennan handed Chu Yun a cigarette and lit one for himself, inhaling deeply before speaking. "Mingyue has been under a lot of pressure these past six months. She's shouldered too much for the sake of our family."
"I'm aware that the Su family hasn't been particularly welcoming to you. Mingyue can be emotionally distant. She may have done things that upset you, perhaps said things that hurt you. But at the end of the day, she's your wife," Su Zhennan said gently.
"I take great pride in having married such an outstanding woman," Chu Yun replied with a smile.
"As her husband, you need to step up," Su Zhennan stated with gravity. "Mingyue is facing tough times. She needs you now. Regardless of whether you can help her overcome this challenge, you shouldn't abandon her as you did six months ago."
Chu Yun felt somewhat embarrassed.
He hadn't been aware of the Su family's troubles half a year ago, but the fact remained that he had stood by without offering support to Su Mingyue. There were no excuses for that. Moreover, he respected Su Zhennan. In the more than six months since he had joined the Su family, Su Zhennan was the only one who hadn't treated him with hostility. Even Su Mingyue had given him a hard time.
"I understand," Chu Yun said, pulling out the last few Red River cigarettes from his pocket and offering one to Su Zhennan with both hands, smiling. "Dad, have a cigarette."
A gentle smile appeared on Su Zhennan's scholarly face as he accepted the gesture from his less-than-perfect son-in-law. Then, patting Chu Yun on the shoulder, he advised, "Take care."
Chu Yun nodded and headed back with Su Zhennan. In the living room, despite Dung Yuhua and Chen Xiuling's persistent questioning, Su Mingyue remained silent. Su Xiaoxiao, standing to the side, sneaked a peek at Chu Yun but kept quiet.
Who had assaulted Han Jin? Dung Yuhua was ready to turn over anyone who confessed to the Han family, hoping to mitigate risks and losses. Su Mingyue and Su Xiaoxiao proved their loyalty by not revealing Chu Yun's involvement.
However, Chu Yun owned up to it. Even if they kept silent now, the truth would eventually come out to the Su family.
"Mom, there's no need to ask anymore," Chu Yun said, snuffing out his cigarette and stepping forward. "I was the one who hit him. I'll take full responsibility for any backlash from the Han family."
His admission cast a brief hush over the room. Dung Yuhua scoffed, "Fool!" His half-year absence had culminated in a major fiasco that now entangled the entire Su family. He had become an utter liability.
The usually impetuous Su Xiaoxiao was stirred by Chu Yun's declaration. His bravery seemed to have grown in their time apart.
"As long as we know who's responsible," Chen Xiuling said with urgency. "Mrs. Han is already at Mingyue's company. We need to go there immediately and clear things up."
Dung Yuhua refrained from taking charge, aware of Chen Xiuling's extensive network from over a decade in the entertainment industry. Chen Xiuling's intervention was preferable to Dung Yuhua's own, especially since her influence within the Han Group had always been minimal, even at the height of her career.
The usually reticent Su Mingyue finally broke her silence. "This all started because of me," she said, her face devoid of emotion, her gaze steady. "He's not involved." She was intent on absolving Chu Yun from the incident.
Dung Yuhua was discontented, and Chen Xiuling was even less pleased.
She had been relying on Su Mingyue to rejuvenate her faltering career.
"Mingyue, stop this foolishness!" Chen Xiuling pleaded urgently. "The Han family will surely seek vengeance. How will you bear the consequences? Do you want to drag the Su family down with you?"
Su Mingyue remained silent.
Chu Yun had fought for her. Despite her cool detachment, it didn't mean she was without compassion. Now that the Han family was out for retribution, she wouldn't cowardly seek refuge behind others. If that were the case, she wouldn't have had the bravery to take on the Su family's troubles in the past.
"Chu Yun, are you even a man?"
With Su Mingyue keeping quiet, Chen Xiuling fixed a stern gaze on Chu Yun, "Are you really going to let your wife face this alone?"
Chu Yun's lips tightened as he responded, "I will assume the responsibility."
Chen Xiuling's tension eased. She pressed on, "Then we must go to the company and explain things to the Han family."
As Chu Yun was about to step forward, Su Mingyue grasped his arm.
Her gaze was icy, yet her voice softened, "Leave Pearl and never return."
Chu Yun paused, taken aback.
Was this the first time she had shown concern for him?
It was also their first physical contact.
He smiled and enunciated clearly, "You are my wife."
With that, he followed Chen Xiuling out of the Su residence.
Su Mingyue trailed behind them, a peculiar look on her face.
Three years prior, Unhindered Entertainment, where Su Mingyue was involved, was valued at nearly two billion. But when compared to the Han Group, Unhindered Entertainment was insignificant.
In the boardroom of Unhindered Entertainment, the mood was somber.
The room, filled with over twenty individuals, was split into three factions. The first was led by Mrs. Han and her entourage, whose formidable presence was the root of the tense atmosphere. The second group comprised the leadership of Unhindered Entertainment, including industry insiders who had attended the previous night's dinner, all wearing strained expressions.
The third group present was the Pearl Police.
The purpose of classifying this incident as a criminal case was to escalate the situation as much as possible. Even a decade or more in prison wouldn't be enough to appease the Han family's fury.
In the meeting room, the majority stood, with only Mrs. Han seated by herself. Her presence was commanding, exuding an air of superiority that was almost oppressive. She held a cup of tea, gently swirling it, yet her gaze met no one's; they all averted their eyes, visibly tense.
The conference room door swung open, and a man accompanied by two women entered, immediately becoming the center of everyone's scrutiny.
Chen Xiuling, an insider, was determined to shield her cash cow, Su Mingyue. She approached Mrs. Han with a sycophantic smile on her meticulously made-up face. "Mrs. Han, there's been a misunderstanding. Mingyue is but a fragile woman."
As Chen Xiuling stepped forward, bending down to offer her explanation to Mrs. Han, she was abruptly cut off. Mrs. Han, with a swift motion, struck Chen Xiuling's face with both the teacup and her palm.
The force of the blow sent Chen Xiuling tumbling to the floor, where she lay in an embarrassed heap.
"Am I here to listen to your excuses?" Mrs. Han rose to her feet, her presence even more intimidating. Her voice was fierce as she declared, "I am here to avenge my son!"
The mood in the meeting room grew more somber, the fear palpable among those present.
