C2 When a Disaster Comes, They Fly Away

Lee Yifann hesitated a bit before he replied with an excuse, "Grandpa, I told you before I am doing my internship in a major hospital. I've been so busy, I don't even have time to eat."

"Oh, it's like that. Then do well in your internship. You must learn as much as you can from the doctors. The doctors in the major hospitals are all amazing."

Lee Yifann's heart skipped a beat. He was discharged from the People's Hospital, and expelled from the Medical University. He didn't dare tell his grandfather of this. He suppressed the helplessness and the sorrow in his heart, and asked "Grandpa, is everything alright at home?"

"Everything is fine," replied his grandfather in heartily laugh. "It's just that fewer and fewer come to my clinic. The villagers nearby don't really believe in TCM anymore. I'm not sure how much it can last."

"Grandpa, after graduation I will come back home and we'll run the clinic together," said Lee Yifann as he clenched his fists.

The clinic was his family's inheritance passed down for generations. He wasn't going to let the inherited clinic go down.

"Silly child, don't make jokes about your future. I cannot see myself running the clinic in the future. I know you mean well and the intentions is appreciated."

"Grandfather."

Grandpa encouraged earnestly, "Listen to me carefully, you continue doing your internship at the hospital properly. Read more of the medical books that were passed down in the family."

Lee Yifann's mood became heavier and gloomy after hanging up the phone.

For generations, his family were all TCM doctors. Since a young boy, his grandfather started teaching him TCM. He also majored in TCM in university. He hoped that one day, he would be able to rebuild his grandfather's medical clinic to its former glory and allow his inheritable TCM to prosper.

From a young age, he worked very hard because compared to other people, he did not have any background and so only studying was his way out to make a name for himself.

He initially thought after getting into the Medical University, this had fulfilled his wish. However, only a fews days into his internship, he got himself in dire straights for trying to save a patient.

Although his dream was very fulfilled, reality was not as kind as he thought. It was very sad.

Being expelled from school basically meant all these years of hard work was done in vain.

Even with all that had happened, he would not be giving up on learning medicine!

He slowly clenched his fist and took a deep breath. It didn't matter how difficult this path was, he would not give up. As a last resort, he would go and see the Big Shot tomorrow.

He picked up the medical book that his grandfather gave him when he left home and started reading it carefully.

The medical book was written in ancient words which was obscure and made it very hard to understand.

Lee Yifann would take the medical book out and read it whenever he had the time. He was talented and intelligent. Carefully studying the medical book, it benefitted him greatly as he gained a lot of medical knowledge from it.

Ding.

The phone rang again. Lee Yifann picked up his phone and looked at the caller ID. His eyes had a trace of gentleness. "Xiaoya, it's so late now, aren't you asleep yet? Are you missing me?"

His girlfriend, Zhao Ya was whom that called him. She was also a student of Medical University, but she was in a different department than his.

She ignored his questions and asked coldly, "Where are you now?"

Lee Yifann felt a little uncomfortable after hearing his girlfriend question him in a cold tone. Whenever Zhao Ya called him in the past, she always had a gentle and sweet tone, asking him how he was doing and whether he had eaten on time. However, today, as soon as she spoke, she sounded very annoyed and cold. He held back the uneasiness he felt and pretended as if nothing had happened. "I'm just resting in the dormitory. What's the matter?"

"Resting? I heard you disregarded the management of the People's Hospital and almost caused the death to a patient and a medical accident. The hospital not only dismissed you but you were also expelled from the school!" Zhao Ya said coldly.

Lee Yifann was shocked, "So you know already?"

Zhao Ya snorted, "The whole school knows about it now. How am I not to know?"

"I did not disregard the hospital's management. I followed the hospital's policies and procedures. I was saving the patient!" Lee Yifann defended himself.

"You almost killed him. Don't try to talk your way out of this. If you were really saving the patient, why did the hospital dismiss you?" Zhao Ya interrupted him with some contempt, "OK, you thought you were saving the patient but now the school kicked you out. What are your plans for your future?"

"I don't know," Lee Yifann said miserably as he lowered his head.

He was full of energy and had all the enthusiasm to save people, but he never thought he would end up like this.

"I knew you had no idea what to do!" Zhao Ya seemed to already guess his response.

"I just wanted to save the patient. Is that so wrong?" Lee Yifann just couldn't understand it. A doctor's duty is to save people. All he wanted to do was to help people.

"Whether it was right or wrong, what's the point now?" Zhao Ya asked indifferently, "You got expelled and you won't be able to find a job. Have you thought about our future?"

Lee Yifann lowered his head more. In a sorrow, he said "I don't know."

"Apart from saying you don't know, what else can you say?" Zhao Ya said filled with disappointment. "If you don't have a job or an income, how are we to buy a house in future? Don't tell me we have to squeeze into a really small rented place?"

"No, I will look after you," Lee Yifann could not bear to allow his girlfriend suffer with him. He couldn't deny the reality, if he can't find a job, there was no income. The living expenses in Luzhou City were quite high, therefore without an income, they would be leading a difficult future.

There is no way they could support themselves without any income.

Zhao Ya was disappointed in Lee Yifann. She had expected much more from him. "It's useless to say anything. You provoked a Big Shot, and he is looking for you everywhere. Are you telling me we have to go in hiding in the future?"

"Are they not going to let me off?" Lee Yifann felt a sudden shiver down his spine. He was expelled from school. Was that not enough? He never thought the Big Shot was still looking for him. So until he was driven to the wall, the Big Shot would never be satisfied.

Zhao Ya sighed deeply. Her expression was somewhat resolute, "I've been thinking about it. You apparently caused their son to be disabled. He is confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. They will definitely not let you off that easily. Perhaps you can lay low in the countryside where they won't be able to find you and give you trouble. I have lived here in Luzhou City for such a long time and I am used to the city life, I won't be able to adapt to the country life."

Lee Yifann gripped the phone tightly and gritted his teeth, "I will find a way to stay here in Luzhou City. I will go and see the Big Shot tomorrow and plead for mercy. If that doesn't work out then I'll look for a job at a construction site."

This was the only option he could think of right there.

He couldn't return back to the country side without exhausting his options. Otherwise, he wouldn't be able to face his grandfather.

Zhao Ya curled her lips, "No matter what job you do, it will be useless. Even if you have a career change, they are not going to let you off so easily. Are you alright just being a normal worker for the rest of your life? I'm going to graduate soon. I am definitely going to be a doctor in a major hospital and help people. If I go to the country side with you, it would be as if I am giving up on my life. The conditions in the countryside is very hard to adapt. I can't bear that ordeal."

Powerless and with sadness, Lee Yifann said, "Xiaoya, I'm sorry. I had no idea things would turn out like this."

He was able to understand what the director meant now. By returning to the countryside, he would be able to continue to live.

Unfortunately the man Lee Yifann offended was very powerful. With one word, he could make Lee Yifann's life a living hell.

"It is meaningless apologizing to me. Lee Yifann, I don't want to go with you to the countryside and live a hard life. I will have to do farm work everyday and my clothes will always get dirty." Zhao Ya took a deep breath, with her mind made up, she said, "Let's break up!"
