C19 The Work Came to Me
"You must really dislike me. Then why would you let me work at your company?"
"Changshun, I pleaded with my cousin for ages. Please don't talk nonsense."
Du Yuewei was so anxious she almost wanted to cover Changshun's mouth with her hand.
"If Miss Ling is looking for a chance to ridicule and toy with those of us at the bottom of society, then I reject your offer. Getting upset on our behalf isn't worth it. Please, just leave me be."
Changshun harbored no fondness for Ling Kemiao; she had unfairly labeled him a villain without cause. There's a limit to being misunderstood, and her behavior reeked of prejudice.
Does being poor automatically mean one resorts to blackmail or crime?
Ling Kemiao's expression turned sour.
"What are you implying? Do you expect a personal apology from me?"
"I don't see that you've done anything wrong. There's no need for you to apologize."
Du Yuewei nudged Xiuxiu.
"Get your brother to stop this nonsense. At this rate, we'll lose the job opportunity."
Xiuxiu remained silent. In her eyes, Changshun could do no wrong.
His treatment of that woman was surely justified; she must be at fault.
"Cousin, don't stoop to his level. He may not be eloquent, but he's diligent. With his looks, he'd certainly be an asset to your company."
Ling Kemiao appraised Changshun.
"You've changed quite a bit. How did you manage that?"
Changshun remained silent.
Du Yuewei quickly interjected.
"Brother Changshun, my cousin owns a beauty business. All those face masks and skincare products I use are from her company. She didn't believe me when I said you turned fair-skinned overnight, so I brought her to see for herself. Do you have some kind of secret? If so, maybe you could partner with my cousin, and you wouldn't have to toil away anymore. Isn't that right, cousin?"
Changshun had no idea about any secret.
It was all the doing of that peculiar belle.
And even if he did know some secret, he didn't trust Ling Kemiao.
Who's to say she wouldn't turn on him like other unscrupulous businesspeople?
"It's a matter of individual skin type; there's no secret formula. If you're skeptical, Xiuxiu can confirm it."
Xiuxiu was taken aback, but she quickly recovered and nodded vigorously.
"It's a matter of skin quality, then. But to turn so pale overnight, that's quite enviable."
Du Yuewei couldn't stop marveling at Changshun's suddenly delicate skin.
Changshun had transformed from a rugged man into a fresh-faced pretty boy. It was quite a drastic change.
However, in a world that values appearance, he was certainly gaining popularity.
"Here's my personal number. If you change your mind, call me and you can start working at the company anytime."
Changshun didn't take it.
"Hmph! Having spirit is good, but think about your sister. School is starting soon. Can you afford her tuition?"
Xiuxiu quickly responded, "I don't need Brother Changshun to pay for my schooling. If it comes to it, I just won't go."
"What are you talking about? You must go to college. A degree is essential for a bright future."
"But..."
Changshun accepted Ling Kemiao's business card.
"I'm ready to work anytime."
"I appreciate those who recognize the situation. My car is outside, come with me. Can you drive?"
Changshun nodded.
He had learned to drive on the construction site and had even managed to get his driver's license during his spare time.
He had hoped to earn enough money to move his grandfather to the city for a more comfortable life, but he hadn't expected so many changes in such a short time.
"Alright, you'll drive later."
Ling Kemiao, clearly accustomed to giving orders, tossed the car keys to Changshun and headed downstairs first.
"Brother Changshun, you really don't have to do this for me..."
Xiuxiu didn't want Changshun to be uncomfortable, so she tried to dissuade him once more.
Changshun gently patted her head.
"Do I look that incapable? Don't worry. I'll work hard. If she tries to make trouble, I'll decide later whether to stay or not."
"Don't make it sound so terrible. My cousin can be a bit haughty, but she's really not a bad person. I guarantee she won't take advantage of her position to bully Brother Changshun."
"Thank you, Weiwei, for taking such good care of Xiuxiu."
Once Changshun descended the stairs, he was immediately met with Ling Kemiao's complaints.
"Can't you move any faster? Don't you realize time is money? You seem to have no concept of time."
Changshun pressed the car key fob and located Ling Kemiao's vehicle—a red Maserati.
It seemed wealthy people always paired themselves with luxury cars.
Changshun wondered if he'd ever earn enough to afford such a car in his lifetime.
Upon arriving at Preweet, Ling Kemiao instructed him to drive straight into the underground parking lot.
"Just head to the Human Resources Department to report in."
Changshun nodded and walked away.
He was rather aloof, mainly because he found Ling Kemiao to be quite a hassle and preferred to avoid her when possible.
"Wait!"
Feeling undervalued, Ling Kemiao's mood soured further.
"Miss Ling, is there something else you need?"
"In the company, you should address me as Ms. Ling. And by the way, you drove quite well earlier."
Changshun was perplexed by this turn of events.
"Okay, you're free to go now."
Ling Kemiao made her way to the elevator leading to the lower level.
Changshun scratched his head, utterly baffled by the enigmatic ways of women.
He approached the front desk once more, only to be stopped again by the two bodyguards.
"Ms. Ling sent me here to check in."
The receptionist, clearly briefed beforehand, promptly beckoned Changshun over.
"You're Wang Changshun, correct?"
Changshun presented his ID card.
"Sorry, but my last name is Ding."
"How odd, but Ms. Ling, she..."
"She never asked for my last name, so she assumed it was Wang. If you doubt my identity, feel free to verify it with a phone call."
The receptionist was diligent and immediately made the call to confirm.
Before long, Changshun was speaking with Ling Kemiao.
"You're not a Wang? But isn't your sister's last name Wang?"
"Did I ever say she was my blood sister? She's actually my cousin."
Changshun didn't want to clarify their relationship too much, so he simply let it be known that Xiuxiu was his cousin.
"Fine, I've got it. Hand the phone back to the receptionist."
After verifying Changshun's identity, the sweet-smiling beauty escorted him to the Human Resources Department.
The onboarding process was swift; Changshun received his uniform on the same day and promptly reported to the Security Department, where he was appointed as the team captain.
The two individuals who had previously blocked Changshun were not pleased. They questioned why a newcomer could assume the role of captain.
Changshun was indeed more robust than they were, but with his boyish charm, he seemed more decorative than practical to them.
"Hey! Let's knock him down a peg. He can't get too cocky just because he got in through the back door."
"Do you think Ms. Ling simply fell for this kid's pretty face, and that's why she appointed him as our captain?"
The two disgruntled security guards whispered among themselves, plotting to give Changshun a hard time.
