C21 The Story of a Master
Jee Faang was aware that mortals simply couldn't use the spiritual medicines favored by Immortal Cultivators.
Bai Ningjun spoke up anxiously, "He's perpetually out of sorts. It's likely that his soul has sustained an injury. I'm aware of some methods to recall a person's soul, but I'm curious about the current state of the person Young Master Jee mentioned?"
"He's just a little boy who was recently frightened by a rat demon," Jee Faang explained.
Bai Ningjun sighed, "This is a little boy, a mere mortal. It's going to be quite problematic. His soul is too fragile to handle herbs imbued with spiritual energy; it would only cause a negative reaction."
Duan Tongxuan chimed in, "The boy's issue stems from deep within his heart. External influences can only offer so much help. We're facing a tough challenge here."
The group was inwardly frantic. Young Master Jee had finally spoken, yet none could conjure a viable solution. The situation was truly desperate.
At that moment, Bai Ningjun's lips curled into a slight smile. "Near Hanqing Hall, we have an herb known as Soul Nourishing Grass, which fortifies the soul. Regularly consuming water boiled with this herb could potentially improve his condition."
"How long will it take to heal with this water?" Jee Faang inquired, turning to Bai Ningjun.
"The soul is the most difficult to mend. In a best-case scenario, it could take up to ten years," Bai Ningjun replied.
"That's an eternity," Jee Faang murmured. "In ten years, Kangkang's grandfather may no longer be with us. That's unacceptable."
"I'll handle it myself. I'll give it a try," Jee Faang muttered under his breath.
Duan Tongxuan and the others trembled at the revelation. Young Master Jee was going to take action personally!
Of course, a simple issue like this couldn't stump someone of Young Master Jee's caliber. Perhaps he was merely assessing our capabilities.
Bai Ningjun gazed at Jee Faang with eager eyes, "Young Master Jee, may we observe how you go about saving him?"
The three individuals beside her also looked on with eager anticipation.
Witnessing a master like Young Master Jee save lives is indeed a tremendous opportunity. If one could also glean some life philosophy from it, it would be immensely beneficial for their lifetime!
"Do you want to see how I save people?"
"I use the same methods any ordinary doctor would to heal and save lives," Jee Faang said with a hint of resignation in his voice.
It was unexpected that even when the soul had departed, the techniques of an ordinary doctor could still be effective.
At this point, the four onlookers were thoroughly astounded. This only increased their eagerness to witness Young Master Jee in action.
"Alright, let's all head down the mountain together."
Jee Faang felt somewhat exasperated. The Immortal Cultivators of this world were peculiar indeed, spending their days circling around him, a mere mortal.
"Hei, keep an eye on the shop at home, I'm heading out," Jee Faang said to Hei, who was wagging its tail nearby.
Woof, woof.
Jee Faang then made his way to the marketplace at the edge of Soong City.
...
"Young Master Jee, what are you planning to buy today? My fish are exceptionally fresh," the vendor next to him offered.
"No, thank you. I'm actually here to see Kangkang today," Jee Faang replied to the vendor.
Seeing the four Immortal Cultivators following him, the vendor couldn't help but look on with respect.
Jee Faang noticed Uncle Li sitting at the street corner, selling vegetables with a worried expression. He seemed distracted, even as customers approached to make purchases.
Nearby, a group of children were gathered around Kangkang, trying to engage him in conversation.
Upon noticing Young Master Jee's arrival, Uncle Li promptly greeted him.
"Young Master Jee, you've come! Please, take a look at my grandson!" Uncle Li was overjoyed to see Jee Faang, filled with hope for his grandson's recovery.
Jee Faang solemnly assured him, "Uncle Li, rest assured, I will do everything in my power to help Kangkang."
Uncle Li, standing beside him, discreetly dabbed away tears and nodded in gratitude.
"Kangkang, how about I tell you a story, would you like that?" Jee Faang crouched down to meet Kangkang's gaze.
Kangkang remained listless, seemingly uninterested in Jee Faang's words.
Employing a story to evoke Kangkang's emotions was a therapeutic tactic in its own right.
Jee Faang was uncertain whether his storytelling approach would aid Kangkang's recovery.
Duan Tongxuan and his three companions stood by, observing Young Master Jee's concerned expression and feeling anxious themselves.
Jee Faang took Kangkang's small hand and suggested as they walked, "Let's head to the pavilion up ahead and I'll tell you an interesting story."
Once they reached the pavilion, Jee Faang settled Kangkang onto his lap.
A group of children, eager for a story, had followed them. One child inquired, "Brother Jee Faang, may we all listen too?"
"Of course," Jee Faang replied, smiling at the children around him.
"Well... the story I have in mind is 'The Investiture of the Gods.'"
Kangkang's current state was due to a fright from a demon, and Jee Faang hoped that by narrating the tale, he could alleviate Kangkang's fear of such creatures.
Duan Tongxuan and the others were initially taken aback by Jee Faang's storytelling plan, questioning its effectiveness.
"At the close of the Shang Dynasty, the Nine-tailed Demon Fox led its kin to cause chaos among humans, prompting the rise of Kunlun Mountain to rescue the common folk."
"How can one save the masses if they cannot save a single soul?"
"If the Heavenly Dao is unjust, then I shall forge my own path."
"The world belongs not to one, but to all its people. Those who share the world's benefits will gain it; those who monopolize them will lose it..."
The archaic language might have been dull for the children, but the four onlookers were filled with fervor.
This was a profound perspective on the world.
No one had ever articulated the definition of the world with such clarity and passion.
Despite not grasping everything, the four were deeply moved by the story.
It was clear that their decision to accompany Young Master Jee had been the right one.
The tale had only just begun, and now the real plot was about to unfold.
"From the inception of the Shang Dynasty, everyone from the three teachings to the nine orders, including immortals and demons, joined the fray..."
As the children learned that immortals and demons were deeply engrossed in the story, Kangkang listened with equal seriousness.
Jee Faang, noting the positive reception, carried on with his narration.
A Nine-Tailed Demonic Fox was influencing the king of the Shang Dynasty, causing the dynasty's scholars and warriors to view it as an even greater calamity...
By this time, the area around the small pavilion was crowded with an audience that had grown beyond the children to include local vendors and passersby.
"The Nine-Tailed Demonic Fox brought the Shang Dynasty to its knees."
"In that moment, Zhou Wenwang, Ji Chang, rose to the occasion. Treating his people with the care of a father, he was determined to topple the oppressive regime."
...
Having listened intently for so long, Duan Tongxuan and his companions reflected on the tale.
Perhaps they were hearing the personal experiences of a great Immortal Cultivator, or maybe it was a glimpse into the world in which he lived.
They felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of inadvertently gaining insight into the life of a revered elder.
Engrossed, they hung on every word as Jee Faang wove his tale.
