C6 Prologue

Salem, Massachusetts

Oh, what have I done? If Elizabeth finds out all this is an act, she’ll kill us all. For now, Abigail, Emily, and the others should be safe. Hopefully.

But at what price? How long will this go on? I have to do something! It’s time to take advantage of my relationship with Elizabeth.

“Elizabeth?” I find her in the throne room –- her new favorite room in her haughty, tasteless castle.

“Yes, my love, what can I do for you?” she asks with a voice that sends a shiver down my spine.

“I wanted to ask if you’ve thought about my curse in the meantime? And when are you ready to lift it from me?” I try to make my voice sound as sweet and slimy as possible. Inside, I’m still choking from the kiss.

“Oh, Corvus, right now we have other things to worry about. Wilbur and his semi-strong Inquisitors are attacking our beautiful new Salem. If you’d help me destroy him, I’d think about it again.”

It’s no secret I don’t like my father very much. But killing him? I cannot approve of his actions and his ideals, but in the end we still have the same enemy. And until this thing is done, I don’t really want to think about what we’re gonna do about Wilbur.

“I’ll … I’ll do what you ask,” I lie. She raises an eyebrow in disbelief.

“Is that so? Don’t take me for a fool, Cornelius.”

“I would never …” I go on, but she raises a hand to silence me. She turns her eyes away and looks at her long, black fingernails as if I wasn’t there at all.

“Leave me alone. I don’t want to see you today.”

Damn, I thought I’d have her by now. But I guess it’s not easy tricking the most powerful witch. I have no choice but to do what she wants.

When Corvus has left the room, Elizabeth looks at the door through which he has disappeared. It’s not real. It’s never gonna be real. He loves Abigail and I won’t be able to do anything about it. Of his own accord, he will never be subject to me ever.

However, the witch cannot suppress a sneering grin; she knows that her strongest weapon has long since been dormant in an oblivious body.
